Startup Software to Follow Rob Walling's Process and Recommendations?

#robwalling #themomtest #startsmallstaysmall #thesaasplaybook #5pmframework

Hi all, my question is:

Has anyone built software that roughly follows the progression of Rob's teachings and recommendations? If so, what options are available for me to use or try out?

Background

I'm heavily influenced by Rob Walling's work. I've listened to "MicroConf" on YT, "Start Ups for the Rest of Us" podcast, started reading "The SaaS Playbook" but switched to read and finish "Start Small Stay Small", and am currently reading "The Mom Test" (as recommended by Rob). Additionally I've tried to use the 5 P.M. Framework for evaluating ideas.

It would be helpful to have some more structure (website) to help faciliate starting my software ideas including:

  • Central place to store my ideas and start the 5PM idea validation grid
  • Move an idea to the validation including a "mini" CRM for tracking customers, email addresses, emails sent, replies sent
  • A place to ask recurring questions according to "The Mom Test" questions to make sure I'm appropriately asking the right questions (at least the minimum set of questions even if I stray to react to a customer's response)
  • A place for references including some of the links I've shared below to credit the authors and people in the space (Rob Walling and Rob Fitzpatrick in this case)

I realized this is only one way to build software, however as an engineer myself, I find following a process is much easier for me to stay motivated and "stick to the plan" and figured others are likely to have a similar problem.

I have a couple little applications I'm working on that might address parts of this, but I don't know anything about the 5pm validation thing. I'll read up on that and then maybe I'll have something more concrete to suggest. Interesting idea, though -- if I understand you correctly you kind of want a place to make ideas/experiences/progress visible to you in this particular framework/context, no?

      Thanks for the response @PeakZebra.

You are right, trying to centralize the data in according to "The Rob Walling framework" .

There's a number of little activities that connect data together nicely, the ideas, the questions to customers, the emails for cold customers. I see a combination of micro CRM, micro Mail sender, micro questionnaire/survey questions (eg Mom Test examples).

However these micro versions of apps could be super dumb, for example populate some template of an email followed by copy/paste into gmail to send vs MailChimp which sends, tracks, reports on emails (I don't need that right now)

I could use any number of apps that handle these bits, but my idea is around minimizing that experience to satisfy sufficient coverage when validating an idea up to small amounts of revenue (maybe $500-$2000 MRR where you can probably start affording better systems)

Well, if it's any help, I've recently released a way to (mostly) drag and drop to create apps atop WordPress. This includes an extremely lightweigh (but customizable) CRM and I haven't (yet) really figured sending email into the app equation, but WordPress handles transactional emails natively and/or allows you to redirect your emails to a third-party email provider. One question: do you have particular systems in mind when you talk about what happens past $2k MRR? Just curious.

@PeakZebra I don't have any concrete reason for the $2k MRR so it's a bit arbitrary. I think there will be a point where systems using these "mini" tools are ready to upgrade to more advanced and/or dedicated systems (e.g. CRM, marketing email provider).

A monetary milestone may not be appropriate for when teams would roll off this type of tool, although have some recurring revenue likely helps to have the operating funds to spend on more expensive tools with more advanced features.

I could imagine having partnerships with these advanced tools that allow easier integrations for either an affiliate payment to transfer clients over to these advanced tools or a cut of monthly subscriptions for referring users to other platforms.

            good points -- thanks!

Probably Notion would be the most flexible at this time.

      👍 thanks for the tip/lead

I’m not aware of anything, but a Notion template might be a neat place to experiment.

Thanks, I started looking into Notion, first time user though I've heard about it before.
