Startups aren't sexy anymore, and why we need to stop putting founders on pedestals

I'm reminded of Spodek's assertion in 'initiative' that there's an entertainment industry around entrepreneurship (Shark tank etc) which has as much to do with real entrepreneurship as dog shows have to do with owning a dog.

Maybe the problem isn't that startups aren't sexy. Maybe it's that they're so sexy there's a lot of money to be made selling a pornographic version.

It is worth dealing with the downsides of founder worship if it inspires more high IQ people to chose building a company over consulting or wall street job.

I couldn't stop laughing when I read “Most of us,” she said, “are just making something slightly better than what already exists.”
It's so true. Truly unique, original, and ground-breaking ideas/products/startups rarely happen anymore. Everything is a copy of something else.

Nothing wrong with that, the market needs alternatives.

Otherwise you're just advocating for each market to be a monopoly.

Yup! We've definitely idolized the Zuckerbergs and Gates' of this world and idealized the startup life too. I don't think people think startups are sexy anymore or that you have to be particularly special to be a founder. As Ms. Taylor points out toward the end of the article, most founders are only making something better than what already exists. Nothing sexy or special about that.

Why bother innovating, if anything remotely innovative will be copied immediately?

Think of Instagram copying Snapchat with stories, or YouTube copying TikTok with Shorts.

The innovation is in the distribution, branding, and business model.

Tech/Feature innovation is obsolete for most consumer CRUD apps.

You know there are startups developing supersonic jets, quantum computing, nuclear fusion, core AI research (not just using someone else's API and calling it "AI"), defense tech / collaborative drone teams, etc. Not everything is a CRUD app that someone releases for a 100 startups in 100 hours challenge.

In my original comment, I specifically stated:

          for most consumer CRUD apps

So yes, I'm only talking about consumer CRUD apps.

Of course there are a variety of other forms of innovative startups out there.

But since you can't protect the IP in software through patents (rarely anyway), you're better off focusing your innovative muscle on distribution, branding, and business model.

Startups are only sexy when they have something useful in terms of generating a good amount of money, startups like building a robot that would literally do nothing are now facing failures. New generations do start their business but they quit after some short period of time because they think it will start generating revenue in 2nd or 3rd month its not like that we have to understand the concept of startup before starting it.

It's good that Founders want to innovate some Legacy Methods or Automate Processes but there is a limit to how much you can innovate & come up with unique ideas.
My main issue with Startups is that they don't care about their Employees & Any Type of Success gets to their Heads. Many Founders think that they are special & Employees are not any part of the Success.
Also, there is so much Copy Paste of Features that Places where the features are not relevant.
Now Founders are more Money Orieneted & not Human Oriented

Truth is in America and many other places, financial success is what is worshipped.

Startups are actually a horrible way to make a living, but you wouldn't realize that reading the tech media.

    1. 1

I think that is a matter of personal preference.

I, for one, quite enjoys being broke and scared. Ramen is food too, you know.

      1. 1

You're not really enjoying your Ramen noodles until you're using your coffee maker to make it! :)

  9. 1

Nah disagree, I want to be on the pedestal

Founders worship creates more new founders and businesses. There is nothing wrong with that. Humans naturally tend to worship other successful humans.

  11. 1

Nope. Too much people who are profiting from 'making startups sexy' for it to be obsolete.

There's private equity involved (BlackRock, BlackStone, etc.), there's VC involved (G3i), there's Angels involved (Naval, Sharran, Chamath, etc.), there's media networks, and a lot of other factors. Even governments have programs for promoting startups to promote regional development.

It's like the war economy. Not going anywhere.
