Stop the excessive meeting culture

As we're entering a new phase of FlippedNormals and expand beyond our little bubble, we've started dealing with a wide array of different companies.
One thing common for all of them, and I can't stress this enough, all of them, is their approach to meetings.
In this day and age, it seems everyone has caught the bug. I'm not sure if it's a side effect of COVID and Zoom, but meetings have become all too commonplace.

We're a small startup, and I really value the efficiency at which we're able to work because of that. But it seems like, as companies grow, this is slowly being forgotten.
In my opinion, the default behavior should be to resolve matters either over email or something like Slack. You would be amazed how many times a 30-minute call can instead be handled through a few emails or messages.

A meeting should have an actual purpose, a structure to follow, and complete as efficiently as possible. It might seem ridiculous to point this out, but try to think about it next time you're in a meeting. Look around to the people who are joining. Does each and everyone have a purpose in the meeting. Are they there simply because they're expected to be there but don't actually contribute. How many are idle without ever uttering a single word.

Meetings should be a last resort. They should be reserved for matters that can only be resolved efficiently by talking to each other.

Totally agree. However part of the source of the problem is captured by this quote from the BBC:

"When managers don't know what they are doing, they generate meetings."

I agree that meetings can be done better. Too much time is wasted in bad meetings.

I've actually been helping a startup launch a platform to help solve this problem - by training people to lead better meetings. You can check it out here: https://www.brightpilots.com
