Building your personal brand in the Salesforce world, step by step, can open a lot of doors, and sometimes even from unexpected directions. It may become a decisive factor in your favor in landing your next dream job. Nowadays, many Salesforce admins and developers are starting to wonder if their roles are still in high demand. But I want to show you a brighter side. Once you get into the Salesforce ecosystem and earn those key certifications, your career options go far beyond just technical roles.
Let’s look at my journey as an example.
My First Steps from Salesforce Admin to Developer
Before starting with Salesforce, I only knew a little about it from Trailhead Playground, but that wasn’t much. I spent over a year studying and working hard to get my first chance. When I got my first job, it gave me a real look at how large Salesforce is, and what was possible with Salesforce, and I quickly realized there was so much more beyond just being an admin. I didn’t want to just do simple tasks; I wanted to solve bigger problems and make things better for everyone who used the system.
As I gained experience, I saw that knowing the basics wasn’t enough. I needed to understand how to build and develop within Salesforce to make a difference. So, I started focusing on learning development skills. That's when I found Focus on Force. It was different because it gave you just the important information focused on certain topics.
Development Skills: Learning, Practicing, and Networking
Step by step, I got into the technical side, like learning Apex and building more complex automation. I took on small projects, created custom solutions, and learned from each challenge. I practiced a lot, especially with mock exams that prepared me for certifications. The more I practiced, the more confident I became. I assume that a lot of us could fail on the first attempt, just because of lack of practice. So, Focus on Force gives you a chance to check yourself before the exam.
Networking also played a big role. Connecting with others who were on the same path helped me learn faster. I joined groups, went to meetups, and followed discussions in forums. Sharing my own experiences and learning from others gave me new insights and kept me motivated.
My Tips for Building a Personal Brand
Building a personal brand is important, especially if you want to stand out and get noticed in your career. It’s not just about what you know but also about how people see you. LinkedIn is a great place to start because it’s where professionals connect, share ideas, and look for new opportunities. Here are my tips on how to build your brand and make the most of it.
Create a Professional Profile Picture and Headline
First impressions matter, so make sure your profile picture looks professional. It doesn’t have to be super fancy, but it should be clear and friendly. Your headline should also describe what you do or what you are passionate about. Keep it short and to the point.
Share Your Story
Use the About section to tell your story. Write about what you do, what you enjoy, and what makes you unique. Keep it real and easy to read. It’s your chance to show who you are beyond your job title.
Connect with People in Your Field
Start by connecting with people you know—friends, classmates, and colleagues. Then, look for professionals in your field and send them a personalized connection request. Don’t just connect for the numbers; focus on quality connections.
Post Regularly and Share Your Thoughts
Posting regularly helps me stay visible. Share updates about what you are working on, interesting articles, or your thoughts on industry trends. Don’t be afraid to comment on other people’s posts too. This helps you engage and be seen as active in the community.
Join Groups, Events and Engage in Discussions
LinkedIn groups are great for finding like-minded people. Join groups related to your interests or industry and participate in discussions. Answer questions, share your views, and be helpful. It will help you build your reputation as someone who knows their stuff. Also, you can join different events where you can find fans of the same technology.
Be Unique!
Don’t be afraid to stand out and be different from others. It's important to find your own path that suits your strengths and interests. Salesforce offers a wide range of career opportunities, all using the same platform. You could start your journey as an Administrator, where you’ll learn how to manage and configure Salesforce. Later, you might decide to become a Developer, using your skills to build apps and customize the platform. If you enjoy working with clients and solving business problems, you can even move on to become a Consultant.
With Salesforce, your career can grow and change, but you’ll always be working with the same core technology, allowing you to develop deep expertise while exploring different roles.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, my journey from admin to developer was all about taking small, steady steps. It wasn’t just about learning the technical side but also about gaining real experience, practicing what I learned, and staying connected with others in the Salesforce community.
I’ve worked in different roles — from writing to community management, creating and publishing Apps, consulting, and even business development. I’ve seen how many opportunities there are for anyone with Salesforce skills. It’s not just about what you do at your desk; it’s about sharing your passion with the community. Whether it’s writing a blog post, answering questions in forums, or speaking at meetups, getting involved can make a big difference. And don’t forget: building a strong professional network and personal brand is just as important as the skills you bring to the table.
