Like many I suffer from bouts of stress-induced mindless media-scrolling. I used to harden myself against this by not being on social media AT ALL. If it were up to me I'd live in a fucking cave in a forest.
But for Chalk Rebels I relented & set up an IG channel. I need to maintain this for the company but I catch myself again & again unproductively scrolling through IG while "maintaining" our social media presence.
Couple this with stress / health problems and "resistance becomes futile".
Any tips on how keep Social Media "strictly business"? I'd love to be able to go in-and-out on IG, a precision commando-assault style attack to maintain our 'gram and NOTHING more.
i also surf many websites but https://isittrue.com/ is best
Hey Francis, I know what you mean. As someone who's managed multiple social media channels at a time, it can get really tough to keep it strictly business without losing oneself to Instagram's addiction fueling algorithm.
The best way to keep yourself distanced from consuming content is to use something like Later or Plann. You can schedule posts, videos, stories and there's no need to even download Instagram on your phone.
Another trick I used is to use the desktop to respond to DMs, if any. I also used Instagram's "quick replies" feature to reply with any FAQs so people don't depend on my replies for answers.
If you must use the app, the best way to go about it is to set aside some time per day, set a timer, log in, respond to comments and DMs and log out once the timer goes off.
It's all about setting clear boundaries and expectations for yourself and your audience.
I hope this helps!
Don't get me started on the app or that it's pretty much impossible to manage a professional social media channel or to do ads without divulging your real identity. I pretty much dropped out of FB / IG in 2013 & only last year was forced to create a Facebook account for a consulting gig. Hated every second of it. Still do. But I need to learn to cope with that deep well of anger.
My willpower is generally no match for tech company algorithms, so I use tech to fight tech.
I use apps like Freedom and Delay to block/limit Twitter and other social media sites. I use Typefully to post to Twitter and follow only one account that reminds me to stop wasting time scrolling social media.
I don't try to make these systems airtight. If I really want to cheat, I can cheat. But the point is that it takes effort for me to visit these junk food sites, and 9 times out of 10 the very presence of friction is enough to curb my appetite.

I recently tried to spend a day without phone or computer (social media) and it was much harder than I thought. I actually wrote about it here.
There are browser plugins that block social media feeds. I have seen this for facebook and youtube, but not for instagram.
Maybe schedule 1 or 2 times a day where you catch up with everything on IG, and strictly don’t touch it out of these times?

agreed with that . The first step is Awareness of the mindless activity , and when you have the mindless/habitual desire to scroll through Social media try to stay mindful and keep in mind your main priorities and goals!
Sadly IG seems to be a requirement in my niche. It's the only channel we've had success so far. I guess I need to see it as a cost of doing business.
