Stripe Dispute Fees Increase to $30 Per Chargeback - What to Do?

Starting June 17, 2025, Stripe will introduce an additional $15.00 dispute fee for any chargeback that is countered and subsequently lost. This is in addition to the existing $15.00 dispute fee applied to all disputes, meaning:

Lost disputes will now incur a total fee of $30.00
Won disputes will remain at $15.00 (no additional fee)

Why is Stripe Making this Change?
Card networks and banks bear the operational burden of processing dispute evidence, particularly for merchants that frequently submit unsuccessful claims. The dispute process is resource-intensive and, when misused, can undermine consumer trust. Card networks and banks pay the price for merchants that frequently submit evidence for disputes they do not win. It's a labor intense process and erodes consumer trust. By introducing this new fee, Stripe incentivizes merchants to only submit evidence for chargebacks they are likely to win.

What Does This Mean for You?
For merchants with low average selling prices (ASP), the new fee structure may significantly impact the cost-effectiveness of countering disputes. With the added risk of incurring $30 per lost dispute, businesses should carefully evaluate their dispute strategy to ensure they are only challenging chargebacks that have a high probability of success.

How Do I Avoid These Fees?
With Stripe’s upcoming dispute fee changes, low ASP merchants (and really, all merchants) need to rethink their chargeback strategy. The new structure makes fighting chargebacks significantly less profitable, especially for businesses with low transaction values. The new dispute fee makes every chargeback more expensive, but you don’t have to take the hit. Leveraging pre-dispute alerts helps you prevent chargebacks before they happen, protecting your revenue and keeping your Stripe account safe.
