Struggling to find a good name for my potential startup. Help!

Hi IHs

I'm in the very early ideation stages of what I hope will be my first startup. The idea is a productivity app - I know, I know, there are hundreds out there already. What mine will focus on is prioritizing self-care. So, once you've added all the things you need to do in the day, the app will automatically add in breaks for you and suggest what to do in those breaks depending on what task you have done just before it. For example, if you've spent 3 hours in meetings then it will tell you to take a 20-minute walk outside.

What I need help with is the fact that I really feel like I need to finalize the name of my app. Kind of like a writer writing a novel and they can't proceed without knowing the name of the novel. I've read a lot of online guides about how to name a product/company/app but I'm still stuck because even with the advice, I'm still only coming up with ideas that are already taken, are cliche, or are just plain boring.

I want something that explains the app so there is no confusion as to what it does but is also memorable in its own right. Plus it needs to be short and snappy, obvs. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

I would say don't waste time on the name at this stage. There are so many more important things to focus on like idea validation and creating an MVP. Just pick a working name for now. You might find the name just randomly comes to you one day. Forcing yourself to be creative can often have the opposite effect, so forget about it and see what happens.

      Yup! You're probably right.

I had the same problem. I found this article on how to name a startup really useful: https://www.failory.com/blog/naming-a-startup

My experience is that make sure your name is not yet include in the search engine results or at least not in the first page results. Otherwise you may not get high priority even when people searching for your company or product name.

      Thanks, this is helpful!

I usually prefer abstract names, because you don't know where your product will go.

PS I am a co-founder of Crove.app. Which is a document automation software, but the name doesn't suggest that.

I agree with all of the people who say to not worry too much about it at this stage, but also keep in mind that if you establish a brand under that name then changing it later can hurt i.e. make it difficult for people to find you if you rely a lot on word-of-mouth for publicity.

Finding a name that is easy to remember and pronounce is great, even if that name has nothing to do with your product. This makes common words are good (but keep in mind it'll probably make it a pain to get a domain name if you care about that)

Personally I've found namelix.com to be good for generating names, or at the very least just getting my mind going with ideas :)

Pick a random name, then ship the product.

Seriously. Call it CareBare Productivity App.

You can always change the name.

WLB for "work life balance" or something similar may work. I would say there is a lot of literature out there about how to achieve that good overall life balance, maybe there is a good name for what the process is to achieve this that you can use.

How about something like "Spacer", could be a double-meaning for spacing out your activities during the day, and spacing out in the "zoning out" sense? :)

I would agree with the people saying not to worry about a name for now. However, I do think there are some things to keep in mind:

    • Make sure the name is easy to memorize and spell. Most importantly, don't make the name a common word but spelt differently, for example: "Fyre" for "fire", "Rowbawt" for "Robot", you get the gist.

    • Following from that, it can help to make it a common word, since if you mention it in conversation, most people will be able to spell it intuitively. For example, I named mine "Evoke" https://www.indiehackers.com/product/evoke

Just make sure it's not a super commonly used word like "orange" or "there", though Apple is quite successful...

    • Feel free to make your name entirely gibberish and made up. Just don't make it an acronym. For example, Faluu, Umox, Loopa, just made up 3 right there. As long as their pronounceable, you should be fine.

Like others have said, at this stage, focus more on building than a name.

Thanks very much for the advice👍

Don't worry about the name right now.

It's the cherry on top. Make sure you have a good cake before you start worrying about the finishing details.

    Hey GregariousHermit,

Coming up with a name for your startup can be tough, but I've got some tips for you:

Understand the psychology behind a business name.
Know the five types of business names: descriptive, evocative, invented, wordplay, and acronyms.
Choose a name that's memorable, suggests what you do, and evokes the right emotions.
Avoid names that are hard to spell or pronounce.
Brainstorm names and evaluate them based on how they look, sound, and what they make people think of.
Make sure the name is available for trademarks and domains.
Register your chosen name and domain.

I pasted your post into ChatGPT, and this is what it had to say:

Naming a product or company can be tough, especially in the crowded space of productivity apps. Here are a few tips that might help you come up with a name for your app:

Start by making a list of words that are relevant to your app and its purpose. These might include words like "break," "self-care," "productivity," "prioritize," and so on.

Try combining some of the words on your list to create potential names for your app. For example, you could combine "break" and "prioritize" to create the name "BreakPriority," or "self-care" and "productivity" to create the name "SelfCarePro."

Consider using a word that is related to your app's purpose, but not directly associated with productivity apps. For example, you could use a word like "balance" or "wellness" to convey the idea that your app helps users prioritize their own well-being.

Don't be afraid to get creative and think outside the box. You don't have to use a word that is directly related to your app's purpose - sometimes a unique and memorable name can be more effective than a descriptive one.

Finally, make sure to do a thorough search to ensure that the name you choose is not already in use by another company or app. You can use a tool like the USPTO's trademark database to check for existing trademarks that might conflict with your chosen name.

I hope these tips are helpful. Good luck with your app!

I further asked it to "list 10 name ideas", and these were its suggestions:

      • "WellBranching"
      • "SelfCareSync"
      • "BalanceBoost"
      • "PrioriBreak"
      • "PausePerfect"
      • "MindfulMinutes"
      • "CareCadence"
      • "RechargeRoutine"
      • "WellnessWheel"
      • "ElevateEase"

I’ve always used NameMesh.com before it got shut down, found ( https://namemesh.pro/ ) this which is a worse copy of the original NameMesh, but it could be helpful to help you find a name + domain

It does take some time to come up with a name that resonates. This can be done is parallel as you work towards the MVP.

https://namelix.com/ -> this is a great tool I've used in the past. Give it some time, Im sure you'll find a great name.
