Good luck to Substack. They set themselves out to be this amazing independent publishing platform for journalists, etc. but they are lacking for the amount they charge.

Substack has some unique features and strenghts, such as grants and creator support. But the impression is they're relying a bit too much on their halo and branding.

Yes this is my feeling exactly. What does Substack have besides brand?

The grants are fine, but they don't scale. 99% of Substack authors aren't going to get any money, so for them the grants might as well not exist, and provide absolutely no advantage over a competitor from Twitter or Facebook.

Right. The problem with Substack grants is the middle class of creators is cut out.

Yeah I did get that feeling especially when they said "They have enormous influence and can make a big positive difference in the world by taking the lessons from Substack to heart." Almost implying they were the ones who created this whole movement. Which they did play a large part in but still seems really self centered.

      I'm no creator superstar either.

Sounds like Slack when Microsoft Teams was launched.

    Expect a similar outcome here.

Came here to say the same thing. Hubris ain't a good look and it ages even more poorly.
