Supabase is the future of SaaS

Not affiliated and I expect some ratios for this take.
But I've used Supabase and I think for SaaS it's incredibly based.

I've been learning front-end for a year and a half now. No CS degree.
And here I was trying to build a 2 sided marketplace.

I've talked to a few backend devs to decide what stack to use. I knew Supabase, but I feared it might be the kind of solution that will make my project hit a wall. After talking to a bunch of people I decided to give it a try.

I went on their Discord and found a talented dev to help me deliver this fast. And 2 months fast forward, we have our platform, complete with social auth, in-app chat, full profile editing, and what I think is a very solid database for an MVP.

Wanted to share this with all the non-backend devs and non-technical founders out there. I think I avoided so many headaches by going this route. I also learned a lot about databases in this process.

This is what I've been building: https://unblokd.com
Now I'm focusing on growing it and improving it, a process that is very flexible thanks to the choices I made previously.

I think the next step up from Supabase will be maybe to set triggers and functions in a more visual way, without going into syntax. When that happens any maker will be able to set how their data behaves and can make any app they dream of. Supabase takes a huge leap in that direction.

I think so too. Supabase has been long time in the making, and has come a long way!

    for SaaS it's incredibly based.

Whoa, first time I'm seeing someone used the word "based" here (tybg). Pretty cool to see. Besides that, I'm not familiar with Supabase but I checked out the site and their demo video and it looks amazing. Sounds like they give you the templated code you need to handle the usual problems dev run into when building a SaaS i.e authentication, profile, ect.

How hard was it to learn Supabase and do you have any learning materials you'd recommend. I'm also curious how you built the front-end of your site. Looks bananas. Keep it up.

Haha, well based is the best word to describe it.

I think if you focus on it it would take about 2-3 months to get the gist. There are lots of tutorials around. Here's a very good one from Jon Meyers https://egghead.io/courses/build-a-saas-product-with-next-js-supabase-and-stripe-61f2bc20 -

The front-end is made in Next JS with Tailwind CSS. It ships insanely fast and I found it easy to pick up. For MVPs I think this is the best way to go.

Another front-end framework that is very promising is this one: https://remix.run
Next JS has better community support though, but if I were to pick up a new framework this would be it.

That is a great idea and product you've built. Congrats!
But you should also check out Appwrite (https://appwrite.io/). I tried using both and Appwrite was much more versatile and feature packed from my perspective. Only downside is that for now you have to host it yourself since there is no cloud offering as in Supabase (it is coming soon though).

But both services are rock solid, future-proof, with a lot of VC capital raised recently so I assume we can expect even more feature and optimizations down the road. Really exciting time to be a developer 🔥

      Thanks!
Yeah, Appwrite is solid as well. I know they've been killing it lately.

Cloud hosting would really make a difference. And another underrated aspect - pay or find someone to make an opinionated tutorial (eg. Make a full-stack directory app with Next JS and Appwrite). Saves a lot of time that you'd spend going through the documentation.

Exciting times indeed. The speed at which you can build a complex MVP using these is staggering.

    It is truly amazing.

Supabase and Tailwind should be the default for any new developer.

      Exactly this.
I polished my CSS knowledge using Tailwind and learned about databases using Supabase. Ideal outcome.
