Taking break by building side project?
Hey everyone,
So, I had this doubt, whether it is effective or not.
Have you guys taken a break from your main (side) project by building or working on another, interesting project ?
What do you guys do? Do you hault your old project or just focus on finishing it first and then only continue to the new project?! And Why?
I only try to work on side projects that have some chance of being a marketing tool for the main project or will likely teach me something I need to learn for my main development work anyway.
I’m building divjoy.com (tool for React devs), and some side projects I invested time into were:
I’ll probably be working on another side project soon that involves Stripe subscription billing because I need to learn best practices around this.
So, If I have understood correctly, You are making sure that all the side projecs you build must somehow help your main project? Interesting. One question, Did you create usehooks.com or chatparty.co BEFORE or AFTER starting divjoy.com? Dude, I really loved the divjoy.com . It seems like a great tool.
Thanks! I started usehooks while Divjoy was still in private alpha. React hooks had just launched and saw an opportunity there. I was on the fence about building it, since focus is important, but went for it because it seemed likely it would be a good marketing channel. ChatParty was more recently, as I'd like to get in the habit of doing weekend projects to inform Divjoy work.

Thanks! The top text says “you may also like my React app builder”. Seems subtle, but a lot of people read that text so it works out pretty well.
I try to work on one project at a time.
My side projects are related to the same thing.

I have a bunch more ideas as well. I like to keep them simple as well.
So, you mean, you do NOT work on any other project until you have completed the previous (or main) one? Hey, I really liked your founder's bingo.
Yeah always complete it. Even if it is just to an MVP level.
Otherwise you will end up with a bunch of uncomplete projects.

When I can't think of new ideas to improve my project, I will take a break to work on other stuffs, whether it's blogging, side projects, watching TED, coursera, etc.

I am not sure what the tool you mean. But AffTable is the tool I made to view different affiliate programs.

I made it after writing the blog post. There is a long post I keep updating every year and relaunch it.
When I work on something, I will write down the challenges somewhere and reflect them after a while. Some of these challenges will turn into a side project
