My company Taxavo, provides an online self assessment tax return service for individuals in the United Kingdom.

Having worked in the accounting industry I’ve seen first-hand the out dated approach accounting firms take to completing tax returns for their clients. While I appreciate that some individual’s cases are more complex, for the majority of individuals the process should be very simple, and can take as little as 20 minutes to complete. Using a traditional accounting firm to complete your tax return generally involves a lot of unnecessary time spent emailing back and forth requesting and obtaining information, resulting in clients paying anywhere between £500 - £1,000 for the service. On the other hand, for individuals who complete their own tax return, put off by the high prices charged by accounting firms, there is the risk that their limited understanding could result in a incorrect return being submitted and fines or penalties being incurred.

We have spent a lot of time designing the portal on our website to capture all the data and documents we need in order to complete the return in one go. The client initially answers a series of short questions which determines which information and document requests are presented. Our approach therefore decreases the time spent by both ourselves and the client by clearly and succinctly asking for the full relevant documents and information required.
As a result of our streamlined and efficient process we are able to offer a competitive flat fee of £99, no matter the complexity of the individuals tax situation.

The process is simple, yet the opportunities are endless. 10.1 million people completed a tax return in 2019, with 1 million of these submitting their tax return late and incurring a fine of £100. It is clear that for so many people completing a tax return is confusing and difficult, and something they dread completing each year. We aim to simplify the process through using jargon-free and straight to the point questions, and take away the burden of the tax return process through offering a competitively priced yet quality service.

What am I looking for from a tech lead?

The MVP has been created by a development agency and so far we have proved the business model works. I'm looking for an experienced hands on tech lead to help accelerate the success of this product. You'll be responsible for all development duties and expected to input on how to improve the product!
