Technical overview and challenges

This app was built with Flutter for these reasons:

  • Multi platform support: Flutter's cross-platform capabilities are excellent, with Linux support included, something I planned from the very beginning.

  • High UI/UX customization and performance: A distinctive app design was a priority, without Flutter capabilities I would have had to struggle with native component styling or settle for a low-performance alternative.

  • Fast, modern development: Flutter's declarative UI and unified programming language across the entire stack are a huge benefit that helped me ship a stable, high-quality product from day one.

  • Rich plugin ecosystem: Purchases, local history and settings are some of the core features made possible by plugins like drift, shared_preferences or in_app_purchase.

However, not every tool I needed existed yet, which comes with the territory when building something original:

  • Microsoft Store integration: This wasn't available from the beginning, so I built my own plugin. It wasn't difficult thanks not only to my background with C++ and Windows APIs, but also to Flutter's excellent plugin documentation. It's called ms_store_trial, feel free to use it in your own Flutter app to offer a trial version on Windows.

  • Localization tools for store listing screenshots: Translating store listing screenshots can be a tedious task without the right tools. I learned this from experience. Since I love using Inkscape for design, I wrote two extensions to help generate localized variants of your designs: inkscape-localization-tools.
