Tell me about your newsletter, and I'll suggest lead magnet ideas

Tell me about your newsletter and I'll suggest a Google Sheet you can make, for a lead magnet, to attract new subscribers to your newsletter.

Tell me

  • Sub Count
  • What your newsletter helps people with.
  • About who subscribes and gets the most value of your newsletter.
  • A Link to your current landing page (would be so helpful!)
  • And if you've made lead magnets, in the past, tell me how they did.

A little bit about me

I ran a newsletter about the influencer marketing industry for 3 years. Sold it in 2020. I now run Better Sheets and help people make great Google Sheets. One of those sheets is a suite of sheets to help curate and grow a newsletter week to week. I happily share free videos on my YouTube Channel and try to help as many people as I can.

When I ran my newsletter I did these promotions of creating lead magnets of one page lists and they greatly accelerated my growth.

A few ideas:

  • Top 100 List of most influential people in your industry (or people you highlight in your newsletter over the past year)
  • A list of resources, and why they are so great.
  • Generate examples/ideas your readers want to do (marketing, ad copy, headlines, cold emails, reddit discussions, tweets, company events)
  • Create a checklist/workflow/planner for your readers to accomplish something.

I've found that when I was small, lead magnets helped me do direct outreach on platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter better. Helped me generate 1:1 relationships and convert people to readers.

When I grew my newseletter a lead magnet became a great way to do FB Ads. I still use lead magnets in my current company and in both cases the cost per conversions for a free lead magnet has been less than $1 per conversion. This was great when I was running a newsletter that could sell ads each month and could generate $4 per reader per year.

Love these threads, I'll give it a go:

    550 subscribers
My newsletter shows a new marketing software surfacing each week.
It's developers who want to learn marketing and marketeers who subscribes.

My best lead magnet is: 7 Best AI Copywriting Tools
It's done fantastic and brought the majority of the subscribers.

Here's a crazy idea: Create a rubric for testing out software in a google sheet. Create a framework that you use to test and measure software you use. For example, some software has a free trial. I see on your site you say " I test out tools each week" perhaps because you've gone through so many free trials, that you have a system for knowing what to do on certain days.

Here's how this could potentially be game changing for you. You review software, you make videos about software. What if people got your free review framework, and then reviewed software themselves, and gave you the review to publish. And made their own screenshare (loom) and shared that video with you. You can add that additional perspective to a YouTube video you make. So someone else can help you make content. And you could potentially get a few reviews of the same app at the same time. Create more youtube videos with your intro/outro and context around other people testing software (with your method/framework)

I'm not exactly sure this would get you immediately new flow of new subscribers, but it would engage your existing list and empower others to help you make content.

Here's one more idea: GO DEEP. Like 2,000 words deep on 5 topics and create a 5 day email series. an email course perhaps is a good word. Because I think you could leverage email series or email courses better than individual downloads. You have good downloads now, try going super deep into 5 products across a "job to be done" or a vertical. 1 ai writer, 1 seo tool, 1 fb ad optimizer, 1 landing page optimizer, 1 revenue thing, 1 link maker. Or 1 form builder, 1 writer, 1 SEO, 1 link. maker, 1 page maker. You would know how some software actually fits together better.

I'd call them "stacks" and go 5 emails deep into a stack for different roles or categories.

These ideas are so awesome Andrew, thank you so much. I've duly noted them down, and already started building my review framework as a freebie 🙌
