Tell us 3 random things about yourself!

The post I made about traction got me thinking about how we can connect the dots between each other to help us build better relationships.

I think we can all be sure that we are pretty much all interested in indie hacking. But wha

1-I dip pizza crusts in pesto.
2-I use an alias when they ask my name at Starbucks.
3-A baby pigeon lives on my balcony.

    1. 5

Pizza crusts in pesto? Just blew my damn mind.... BRB need to get some pesto

Also, what's been your best alias at the ol' SB??

      1. 2

Sir, I commend your pizza roll dipped in mustard initiative.

I can't divulge my SB aliases here but I can tell you that I am on my way to ye old SB right now, and I will casually use Dr. Nick Riviera.

        1. 1

I wish I could stake claim to it. One of my hacker buddy's from way back was like "try this, and don't knock it until you do"... 20 years later... still dipping.

That's awesome... I make my kiddo give her name at the SB, which is awesome because when they call "Lizzy" and I walk up, I usually get a double take.

Do you adopt new personas with the names at all?

    2. 3

Starbucks alias --->Thought i was the only one that did that

      1. 1

Same here too - also doe that when TrueH aask for an ID.

    3. 2

Haha, I always use an alias at Starbucks too!

      1. 1

May the mystery of your true name never be solved.

    4. 1

Do you take care of the baby pigeon?

      1. 1

Not personally, luckily the mamma feeds the baby and keeps it warm. I just make sure not to disturb them and check on their nest once in a while :)

    5. 1

      Yeah pizza and pesto...great combo.

  4. 3

    • I use to love playing basketball as a child, was gutted when a move put all that to a stop
    1. 2

Shouts from us home schoolers in Texas!!

    2. 1

I am such a fan of unschooling, and I dreamed of doing it. But, the reality is, I'm super happy for the time (3 hours a day) my son spends at daycare. In addition, I am so grateful, I can spend the rest of the day with him.

I also love to run. It is one of the few things that helps me to clear my head.

      1. 1

My girl goes to (a Montessori) nursery. All my kids have gone and my youngest will go too. They won't be going to school though. To me it's about making a conscious choice...and having that choice. We have choice with the nursery, can pull her out any time, take days off as and when we feel like it - we can't do that with school. (Parents in the UK get fined for going on holidays during term time!)

I swear that running saved my sanity!

    3. 1
      • Weight lifting is the best
      • Finding that I love community building a lot more than I thought I would.
      • Wine? Yes.

Edit: A big motivator for my indie hacking journey is that I want to be in a position to home school my future kids. You're the first person I've heard use the term 'unschooling', so that's something for me to look into now :)

      1. 2

I keep attempting at trying to create an unschooling resource/community, but life keeps getting in the way. I have it in a constant incomplete state :(

I think I'd like it to be my next project though.

Here's a partially baked resource on alternatives to school, 'world schooling' should be on that list - https://www.unschool.me/resources/alternatives/

We do a mixture of stuff, which to me is unschooling, we basically choose what we want to do. A mixture of forest school, clubs, sports, meetups and time at home doing a bit of creative/writing/reading stuff.

        1. 1

Thanks, I've got plenty of research to do...still have a few years to plan, at least :)

      2. 2

Look up "World Schooling" as well.... we take a blended approach currently (traditional book work + unschooling) but are on a trajectory to take to the road in a couple of years to travel abroad and learn along the way!

        1. 1

Sounds great, I'll check that out!

    • Born in Harlem NYC in the 1960s..My father was Black and my Mother white

    • Being an interracial child in 1960s Harlem was tough for me...usually every morning some black kids would try to be me up on the way to school..Some white kids would try to beat me up on the way home...but after awhile..I learned that I could withstand one helluva ass kicking..while giving them out too.

    • I once beat 10 kids in a row in a 1 on 1 after school..I looked like crap when I got home..but I won all 10 fights

    • My very 1st business was a sales of processed street side pharmaceuticals in 1976 , I had 3 employees .

    • When my mom got sick..I was placed in a group home for boys , because I was considered incorrigible......The judge said he felt this was the right decision for me because of my past involvement with creating liquid fueled rockets , bombs and fireworks , along with school issues like fighting , arguing that Jesus was Black...... and my general dislike for the

        1. 1

Fun, I enjoy staying up late sometimes, but very far from being a night creature.

Like do you actually do crazy stuff like sleep during the day and wake up at night?

          1. 1

There was a time when I regularly went to bed very late, now I rarely go to bed after 1am.

On the Shortness of Life is such a helpful book.

      1. 2

Nice, added to my list!! tyty

    2. 1

Love the part: „stopped being introverted and anxious“

I just to be super quiet - especially with strangers. On my way to change that.

      1. 1

        Right on!

I think what really got me over the hump was last year when my startup at the time was floundering and I needed to step up my freelance game. That turned into a lot of phone conversations which in the past I would try to avoid just because I got worked up over it.

Somewhere in there I was like "ok Sherman, you need to be done with this nonsense" and since then have been pushing myself out of the box more and more.

Still an awkward weirdo, but don't feel like my heart is going to explode anymore!

        1. 2

Like that. Working on getting better at it. Thanks for sharing.

    3. 1

How does one meet Chuck Norris

      1. 1

He was a judge at a Tae Kwon Do competition I was in like 100 years ago as a child.

This was pre-"you don't meet Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris meets you" and all of that. #inb4

        1. 1

Waw, I can't imagine a time before the Chuck Norris memes. That's crazy.

          1. 1

The 90s were a simpler time when flannel covered apathy eventually turned into tribal tattoo covered angst. I miss those times.

  10. 2

    Fun idea, Rosie!

    Three random things about myself:

    • As a child, I was a competitive wood carver
    • I used to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but an injury last year left me mostly unable to walk. Sure, I sit too much these days, but there's always a silver lining. The injury gave me the time to revive my side-project and really get into Indie Hacking.
    • I can't just lick my nose, but I can lick right up my nostril. This was a better party trick at 5 than at 25, though.
    • Used to be a vegetarian (for a decade)
    • Really enjoy stand-up comedy
    • Day job? I work at a marketing agency
    • Cryotherapy is fun
    • Sensory deprivation tank evangelist
    1. 2

Damn, really sorry to hear about the injury.
I practice bjj myself and that is something I always worry about.

Hope you can find a way to get back at it eventually!

EDIT: forgot the obligatory Oss! ;D

      1. 1

        Haha, thanks!

I'll be back to it as soon as I'm healed. Looks like it'll be another six months... but still, the sport is worth it.

In the meantime, I can assuredly say that I don't recommend hyperextending all of your toes. Turns out you can bruise your bones :D

    2. 1

Okay, i just imagine you licking your nostril, but can’t. Can you send a pics? :-)

Hope you will be back to full health soon.

      1. 1

Hah, unfortunately, I know I'd regret that photo more than my comment :)

        1. 2

          A video perhaps? 😂

    3. 1

      Why'd you kick the vegetarianism?

Also, have you seen the Adam Devine standup on Netflix yet? Saw it the other night, one of the funniest specials I've seen in a while!!

      1. 1

I kicked vegetarianism because I found it increasingly difficult to keep up nutritionally while pushing myself athletically.

When I made the switch, I was practicing Jiu-Jitsu ~12hrs/wk and weightlifting 3 times a week. After a decade, out of nowhere, I just started craving meat endlessly. It took me a couple of months to finally accept that craving and switch back to meat, but I started to feel much more energetic afterwards.

At first, eating meat felt gross to me after such a long time without it, but now I wouldn't go back to vegetarianism. I even tried the carnivore diet for a couple of months. On that diet, I'd never felt better...but eating nothing but animal products got boring quick.

Now I stick to a modified keto diet (high protein, high fat, low carb) which I've found works well for my nutrition goals while helping me to reduce inflammation issues from old injuries.

As for Adam Devine? I haven't, but I'll give it a watch for sure!

        1. 1

Interesting. I did 30 days off meat for Lent this past year and while not craving the meat, I did notice that my ability to get enough protein into my diet suffered. I do small daily workouts and noticed my strength dialed back a bit as well.

Been back on meat and bumped my workups back up to "intermediate" and feeling great again.

Report back if you end up watching that special. I don't watch a ton of comedy specials so curious to hear how it stacks up :)

  11. 1
    • I drove solo from D.C. to S.F. in 4 days(48hrs total)

-actively obsessed with Tesla as a stock, strong conviction that the company is going under
-I quit my previous job not intending to start a company but to get a job in deep learning. I created a deep learning app for practice and decided it could really be its own business.
-lots of social angst about employment, authority, how software companies should work, and how software makers should get paid

    1. 1

Do you own any stock? Or just keeping a watchful eye?

      1. 2

I own put options, so effectively I'm betting that the stock price will crash, and if it does I will make money.

I actually find the stickers really annoying now, so don't think I'll do it in the future!

      1. 1

Haha - maybe only an IH sticker xD

    2. 2

I can totally relate to the recovering perfectionist. I’m on the some road...

        haha - cool blog btw!

    • I live in Åland Islands, Finland.
    1. 2

Cool, I speak German, Dutch, Italian and English. Although, I get rusty quickly if I do not practice regularly.

    2. 1

I went to Finland for a hackathon a few years back. Lovely place. What do you mean the ocean is your second ecosystem? Do you work on a boat? 🤔

      1. 1

        Oh really? where about?

I grew up in Spain near the sea so been surfing my whole life....

        1. 1

It's called Hack Junction and it was in Helsinki. Also made my way to some ice cave when I was there, forgot where that was though.

That's cool, I'm from an island in the Caribbean, but not much people surf there 😂.

    1. ATX transplant
    2. My ideal company is one that:
    • Feels like a hobby
    • Can work 4 days a week
    • It's not just swapping chains from corporate to my own startup
    • Doesn't have to be the next Sillicon Valley disruptor (btw last night I watched HBO documentary on Theranos, no spoilers but... geee... the lengths startups go into to try to be the next Apple)
    • Can be ethical and sustainable, you don't have to exploit customers/employees/nature to create wealth
    • Help people to create meaningful connections.
    1. Wanted to be a writer, when I realized how much I had to read (and that I would basically starve to death) I just followed what my then gf was studying that was CS.

Oh, number 2 resonates so much with me. Exactly what I’m after too.

  19. 1
    • I love vegetables
    • My arms are very flexible
    • I believe philosophy (from classic philosophers / religion / any source) is really important
    1. 1

i like your point of view sir.

      what are the best vegetables

      1. 1

All of them! But I really like mushrooms, eggplants, zucchini, green salad, pees, olives...

    2. 1

Is religion philosophy though? I think religion is fundamentally dogmatic (never changes its point of view) whereas philosophy can be open to new ideas.

      1. 2

Religion can be a lot of things. There are a lot of branches from the main religions for example, each of them sharing a different point of view.

Let's take Buddhism: what's fascinating for the western world is not necessarily the religious practices themselves, but the philosophy behind it, explained by the people practicing and by the texts. Meditation, thinking about suffering and life, to name a few.

  20. 1
    • I have 2 kids
    • I love LEGO
    • I drive a Tesla
    • I have lots of curly hair
    • I always put on my right shoe first
    1. 1

With the right show thing... I need to know more. Is it a conscious thing, or just sorta happened that way??

      1. 1

I put on my shoes everyday, so now it's almost unconscious. But if I pick up left shoe first to put it, I put it back and get my right one instead. If somehow I end up putting on my left shoe first it feels 'icky'. Like brushing your teeth with your left hand.

This is the only really weird thing I have. I'm not superstisious, not neurotic, not autistic. It is what it is :)

        1. 2

I'm a 5 swipes of deodorant kind of guy with the same less than specific reason, lol!

Re: brushing with your non-dominant hand.... supposed to be good for brain function since you're having to get out of your comfort zone. Don't think the same applies to shoes though :P
