the 3 lines my AI agent business case was missing

3 lines saved me a saturday. agent does X / throughput goes Y / productivity gain Z. that's the spec block I used to ship. but the line that mattered most was missing - what I committed to doing with the time the agent gave back. without that line, the dividend got spent on whatever was already on top of the queue.

added a fourth line this month: "time gained reinvested into [named project, owned, dated]." 4 weeks in, it routed about 6 hours/week into one specific feature instead of melting into random PRs and slack threads.

what's on your AI agent spec that names the reinvestment commitment?

The business case gap for AI agents almost always comes down to: what specifically breaks today without this, and how do you measure when it's working?

For solopreneurs specifically, the business case for operational AI is clearest when the pain is already quantified. 'I lose 4 hours/week manually updating my CRM' is a business case. 'I want to be more organized' is not.

The 3 lines usually missing: (1) what the current cost of the problem is in time or money, (2) what a 50% improvement would specifically look like, and (3) what the success metric is at 30 days. Without those, you can't tell if the agent is working or just busy. Most solopreneurs skip this because it feels like overhead, but it's actually what separates agents that stick from agents that get abandoned after week 2.

ran into this with my CRM setup - didn't have the 4 hours/week number until it was already running. intuition first, justification later.

    This hits hard.
To answer your question, I hadn't thought of that and it makes a lot of sense, so thank you.

glad it clicked. the weird thing is that question never makes it into the room - everyone's laser-focused on building the agent, not on what the org commits to after it ships. I've been adding that line to every business case doc now even when nobody's asked for it.
