Buying an existing side project is underrated in this community.
A lot of aspiring founders have no audience and no product. This makes starting a side project from scratch a super uphill battle. Not impossible of course, but miserably difficult.
But a lot of these same people have built up a decent savings from their day jobs. It seems like the default path is to quit your day job once you've but up a year or two of savings and then build a project from scratch.
Why?
Seems like a better default might be buy a project that's already found some product-market fit, thereby tremendously cutting down on the risk. On top of inheriting that product's revenue stream, you also inherit an audience — i.e., the product's users.
Maybe freedom from the job is the most pressing desire for them, so it’s much more desirable to quit and build than to continue at the job and buy product(s).
I like the idea of purchasing though because different people have different skills and it’s likely that the purchaser will have ideas and capabilities to grow the product that the seller didn’t.
