The Art of the Pivot

This week I rebuilt and rebranded my project.

Open Source Capital is now Startup Sanctuary

I did this based on initial feedback from customer interviews over the past few weeks and to help refine what I am offering for users.

"A pivot usually occurs when a company makes a fundamental change to their business after determining (usually through market research) that their product isn’t meeting the needs of their intended market"

This pivot, while not a large one, was necessary in order to move towards a better product market fit.

I am writing this post as a reminder that the ability to change and pivot your ideas and product at any point is critical to your success and staying agile.

For startups and smaller teams, especially if you don’t have too many customers just yet, the art of pivoting is much easier.

Not allowing myself the freedom to make changes and pivot projects in the past ultimately led to stagnancy.

Getting feedback from users was pivotal to this rebuild for quick decision making.

Is anyone else thinking about pivoting their products or services?

Hi Gordon! Best of luck with the pivot. You mentioned that initial feedback from customer interviews is what spurred you to rebuild and rebrand. Did you use a specific framework for capturing this feedback and incorporating it into the new platform? Thanks in advance!

Hey @1cph. I wouldn't say I used a specific framework. However, I did try to ask questions in line with tips from "The Mom Test" to gather insights from users.

I then used these qualitative insights to refine my website and rebrand. The main feedback was that it lacked congruency and the concept was too vague. I took all that on board when rebuilding and used that info to make my offering more clear and concise. Hope this helps.
