The Beaver Dam Initiative: Building More Than a Marketplace

We’re introducing a new initiative at Beavy: the Beaver Dam Initiative.

The idea comes from the beaver itself.

A beaver doesn’t simply build a dam. It creates an environment where an entire ecosystem can develop around it.

That’s the thinking behind this initiative.

We want Beavy to become more than a place to discover and order local food. We want to help create a stronger community around independent food businesses.

The initiative will bring together:

  • Free discovery and access
  • 0% commission ordering
  • Free learning resources
  • Onboarding and support
  • Community-focused resources and initiatives

The goal is to create an environment where independent food businesses can connect, learn, be discovered, and grow.

We’re calling it the Beaver Dam Initiative because the metaphor fits what we’re trying to build:

Build the foundation. Create the ecosystem. Let the community grow.

This is a new chapter for Beavy, and we’re excited to start building the dam.

interesting take. how are you handling demand side early on? that's usually the killer for two-sided platforms.

Yeah, the two-sided marketplace problem is definitely real.

Right now we’re keeping it very hands-on. We’re building supply and demand together, market by market. We’re reaching out to sellers one by one, talking to them directly, try to understand their concerns/challenges, helping them get listed, and then using their presence to start bringing local customers into the platform.

On the demand side, we’re also working on local SEO, social/community outreach, content, and partnerships. We’re still very early, so honestly we haven’t “solved” demand yet but we’re just doing the unscalable work first and learning what actually moves the needle.
