Of the 26 strongest problems we have documented for coaches and consultants, one theme repeats more than any other and it is the only one appearing 3 times: retention and renewals.
Which is awkward if you came looking for something to build, because keeping clients is simultaneously the best-documented problem in this vertical and the one software can do least about.
In a coaching business retention IS the service. Ask what actually decides a renewal and the answer is the last six sessions — whether the client got somewhere, whether they felt heard, whether the coach remembered what mattered. None of that is a feature.
So this is a trap that looks like an opportunity. The documented problem is real and repeated, the market is identifiable, and the core of the problem is precisely the part you cannot ship. Build the obvious thing and you have made a reminder app for a problem whose cause is elsewhere.
The honest move is to split the problem and only claim the half that is mechanical. We split renewal work into 4 parts: the relationship, remembering to ask, knowing where you stand, and the awkward conversation. Software can take nothing from 2 of them and most of the other two.
That ratio is the whole assessment of this vertical, and it is better than it sounds. A lapsed renewal nobody chased is a pure mechanical loss, and the coach knows exactly what it cost them. That is a product. Whether the client wanted to renew is not.
The narrowing test from our too-broad guide is the one that matters here: can you name a buyer specific enough to find twenty of them this afternoon, and have you written down what you are deliberately not building. For this vertical the second half is the hard one, because every adjacent feature is defensible and each one moves you toward being the platform.
A platform for coaches survives no contact with the arithmetic. The thing that notices a prepaid package is nearly used up and sends the message might.
The honest limit on all of it: only 5 theme labels occurred more than once across 26 records, and nothing occurred more than 3 times. That is the strongest clustering the data contains and it is weak — read it as what we managed to write down, not as a ranking of what coaches suffer most.
