The Best Journal I’ve Ever Used

Over the years, writing has had a profound impact on my life.

It helps process thoughts, tackle problems, and generate ideas.

Writing provides a snapshot of your goals, wants, desires, neurosis and everything that runs around in your mind all at once. There is a feeling of catharsis when you lay down everything in your mind on paper.

It almost feels like mud settling in calm water, enabling you to finally see with clarity.

When I discovered the incredible positive effect of writing, I created 365 Gratitude — A simple journaling tool to help fight against the inherent negativity bias many of us struggle with. A tool to help you reflect on all that is going well in your life. To appreciate the people you love and things you take for granted — Everyday!

Apps that guide you using prompts are amazing. It helps you focus on a specific area of your life and dig deeper. However, years of user feedback have shed light on the fact that no single prompt can universally resonate with everyone, definitely not in all situations.

Our moods change, our circumstances change. Each of our thoughts, struggles and obstacles are unique and requires something personal.

What if you could find a writing partner that is available 24/7, someone that would help you think through stuff, help you generate new ideas and listen to you like an empathetic friend?

A few months ago, I began journaling with Chat-GPT and found it to be a perfect companion for engaging with my thoughts. This AI-powered intellectual companion dazzled me with its capacity to guide and direct my thinking, uncovering fresh perspectives about myself.

Dan Shipper summarized the power of GPT as a journaling tool in his article “GPT-3 Is the Best Journal I’ve Ever Used”:

Talking to GPT-3 has a lot of the same benefits of journaling: it creates a written record, it never gets tired of listening to you talk, and it’s available day or night.
If you know how to use it correctly and you want to use it for this purpose, GPT-3 is pretty close, in a lot of ways, to being at the level of an empathic friend…
If you know how to use it right, you can even push it toward some of the support you’d get from a coach or therapist. It’s not a replacement for those things, but given its rate of improvement, I could see it being a highly effective adjunct to them over the next few years…
Journaling in GPT-3 feels more like a conversation, so you don’t have to stare at a blank page or feel silly because you don’t know what to say. The way it reacts to you depends on what you say to it, so it’s much less likely to get stale or old…
It can summarize things you’ve said to it in new language that helps you look at yourself in a different light and reframe situations more effectively.

In this way, GPT-3 is a mashup of journaling and more involved forms of support like talking to a friend. It becomes a guide through your mind — one that shows unconditional positive regard and acceptance for whatever you’re feeling. It asks thoughtful questions, and doesn’t judge. It’s around 24/7, it never gets tired or sick, and it’s not very expensive."

One of the key parts of this article is the phrase “If you know how to use it right…”

I came across the same limitation when I started using Chat-GPT as a journaling tool. It requires a little bit of tuning to make the AI respond to you the way you want.

After a lot of trial and error, I came up with a simple process to integrate it into my journaling practice. The ensuing effect was truly astounding — a quantum leap in my ability to reflect about my life and put down my thoughts.

The moment I discovered this approach to journaling, I knew I had to make it into an app. And so I got to work. After a few months of work, I am happy to introduce Insight Journal.
