The best links from Hacker News on anything!

Hey everyone!

I love how posts on Hacker News are not just about news, but also about timeless articles, essays, or videos (there's no other place like it). It's an awesome resource if you're looking for some recommendations! But it's also short-lived - even the best links disappear after 24 hours.

So I built a website to browse and search across ALL the best Hacker News posts of the last 10 years:

hn.lindylearn.io

What you can do with it:
๐Ÿ’ก Find the best links, articles, or discussions on ANY topic, e.g. "startup ideas":
โ†ณ hn.lindylearn.io/search?q=startup%20ideas
๐Ÿ“š Read some of the best essays of all time (according to Hacker News):
โ†ณ hn.lindylearn.io/best
๐Ÿ‘€ Save time: Which are the best posts from this website I just saw?
โ†ณ hn.lindylearn.io/from?site=paulgraham.com

I hope it's useful for you all! In some way, it's a larger version of all the best resource lists posted on Indie Hackers, since most links are also posted on HN ๐Ÿ˜„

โš ๏ธ Fair warning though: I used the original Hacker News styling we're all familiar with, so I'd recommend zooming in 110% in your browser. ๐Ÿ˜…

    Super cool project! Thanks!

This is a such a cool idea, thanks for building.

Can you please share your stack and process building it?

Sure, I might make another post about that too. I think I always had the idea to highlight "timeless" HN posts since I like them the most. Decided to actually build it 4 days ago because I'm getting stuck with other things and I want to regain momentum (and do some marketing) with smaller projects. That definitely succeeded, so I'm very happy with the outcome!

Most of the data can be queried and aggregated through the HN BigQuery dataset, and I run a periodic Node.js function to poll more recent posts from the API. The filtered posts are hosted in Firestore for most of the pages + Relevance.ai for the search. The frontend uses Next.js and the original HN CSS + small tweaks like the year display.

BTW, this project also got #10 on the actual Hacker News frontpage yesterday (about 10k views so far)! ๐ŸŽ‰

I typed "esports" in search - and nothing about esports came out

    1. 1

Ah, that's unfortunate. The search doesn't work well for some abbreviations. Also, maybe there aren't that many "timeless" posts about esports yet.

I've always been interested in Hacker News and content curation around it, nice work.

I generally use https://hn.algolia.com/ to search for specific or well-received posts etc. on hacker news, can you elaborate how the lindylearn version differs from it?

    1. 2

Just try both side-by-side for a few queries ;)

hn.algolia.com is good to get specific articles or comments, hn.lindylearn.io to get frequently-cited posts about a general topic. The site only indexes old articles that are still frequently reposted (thus more likely to be useful).

        Interesting, thanks for claryfying!
