The commercialization of university-based research - Idea validation

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this group and I hope I am able to explain my thoughts well.
First things first I am a founder of an online scientific magazine and for that reason I am dealing with scientists in order to disseminate their findings to the public.
Sometimes, some researchers are truly sad because they are not able to market the results of their research outside the university environment. On the other hand I receive some emails from business companies, sometimes they are not able to get the right researcher for one specific challenge and hackathons aren't the best solution (very often hackathons required a lot of time in order to solve a business challenge).

I would like to know if such thing (now I am talking about scientists) is a real problem or not. What questions should I ask to researchers in order to understand if that is a real problem?

Should I ask some general questions such as what is your typical working day, what challenges are you facing in your current role and only in the end ask something like "are you interested to reach companies that will commercialize your findings?"

I'm trying to think a sort of marketplace to bring researchers and companies together. But I don't want to waste time and resources for nothing.

Thank you in advance for your patience and your precious help!
