The Crucial First Steps to Build a Successful Tech Startup

If you do a quick search on the web for the keyword “how many startups fail”, most of the results will point to a number around 90%.

That’s one entrepreneur out of ten.

Not pretty.

And I hate to say it, but it’s not hard to see why.

The ugly truth is that, more often than not, first-time founders are simply unprepared for the task ahead.

There’s a reason why Reid Hoffman, the founder of Linkedin, says that “starting a company is like jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down”.

Or that you can find all kinds of similar commonly used expressions around the same idea. Like: “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won't, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can't.”
It’s that hard.

Often we’re so in love with the idea that we underestimate the level of effort and commitment required to make it all work.

Or we don’t have enough expertise…

or money…

or network...

or mindset...

The list goes on.

Here at Altar, we know that very well. We’ve been on both sides of that fence more than once.

As entrepreneurs ourselves, but also from knowing and working with dozens of other entrepreneurs helping them build their products. Or interviewing them to share their stories with our community.

So a few days ago we decided to take that experience and condense it into one extensive guide, designed to replicate the advice we usually pass on to the people that work with us.

The result is a step-by-step process that goes through the crucial first steps of building a startup.

We covered everything from product reasoning and the importance of sharing your idea to finding co-founders, early hires and investors.
