The Do and Do More's of Newsletters

Here are a few points that I think will help you succeed, if you embrace them, you embody them, you make them your own.

Do Listen

  • Read what others say about other newsletters
  • Read what other say about your newsletter
  • Sure, you can do reader surveys, but it's a bit impersonal.

Listen More

  • Jump on a call with a reader or 20.
  • Give your readers something to respond to beyond "give me feedback."
  • Read what your readers read on LinkedIn

Do P.R.

  • Reach out to other newsletters
  • Reach out to publications and writers. Tell them they are featured in your newsletter.
  • Write about great work, and tell the writers about it.

P.R. More

  • Actually love other newsletters and promote them in your newsletter.
  • Write a breakdown of your favorite newsletters, that your readers would also love.
  • Create a list of your sources and publish it.
  • Create a top 10 list of writers in your industry. Share it.

I'll put myself out there first:

This is great @AndrewKamphey. So often we want to just write about what interests us without taking into consideration what people are actually looking for. Love your points about listening more and even chatting with readers to garner deeper insights.

It's fun to have no agenda. Just chat. See what's going on in their lives. Answer any gnawing questions they have.

Absolutely my man. Thanks again for the reminder!!

Mine is also fairly new and small, struggle to get new subscribers

The only thing i really do is refactor old ones, so everything it would mention something from a old article link that in it as well.

Thank you for sharing these ideas with us. I have just started a newsletter and I want to grow it as well but I am not good with marketing/growth part. Can you please help me with the following doubts?

    1. What should be the content generation rate i.e. how many "newsletter" should I be sending in the early beginning? I write 1 newsletter per 10 days.
    2. What should be the primary ways to promote newsletter?

I would really appreciate your response. Thanks!

      1. Weekly or Daily
      2. No primary. Lots of things. Everything works so find what works for you, your content and your audience.

Thank you for answering. While I think "daily" would come of as spam, I would take a look at doing it "weekly".

I'm curious, what has reaching out to people you featured done for you personally?

It's been absolutely amazing. Created relationships with cool people doing cool stuff. Gotten me responses from great writers and great journalists.

Looks interesting! Subbed. Mine is pretty new: https://growthdesigninsider.substack.com/

I am still reading other growth newsletters to see which ones I can promote in mine, but my subscriber exposure right now is very small. Working on posts in spare time.
