The exact cold email script that gets agencies to reply (and the 3 versions that got ignored)

i've sent over 150 personalized cold emails to marketing agencies. most got ignored. but the ones that worked all followed the same pattern.

here are the 3 versions that failed, and the 1 that works.

version 1: the "we're amazing" pitch
"Hi, we're Vemtrac Labs and we've built an AI-powered outreach platform that leverages machine learning to optimize your client acquisition pipeline..."

replies: 0. nobody cares about your tech stack. agencies get these all day.

version 2: the "we do everything" pitch
"We offer SEO audits, content creation, social media management, email marketing, lead generation, website optimization..."

replies: 0. when you offer everything, you stand for nothing. agencies already have vendors for most of this.

version 3: the "free consultation" pitch
"I'd love to schedule a 15-minute call to discuss how we can help your agency grow..."

replies: 0. a call is a commitment. nobody schedules calls with strangers from cold emails.

version 4 (the one that works):
subject: {their domain} — quick question about your client outreach

"Hi {agency name} team,

I ran your site through our SEO scanner and found some opportunities. [specific finding: missing alt text on 12 images, no meta descriptions on 3 pages, etc.]

We built an outreach service for agencies: 500 personalized cold emails per month to your clients' prospects. Each email references a real finding from the prospect's website. Not templates — actual scan data.

$297/mo, fully automated.

Happy to run a free 5-prospect demo for one of your clients.

Cheers,
Archer"

why this works:

  • opens with proof you looked at their site (the specific SEO finding)
  • one sentence describes the service — no fluff
  • includes a number (500 emails) and a price ($297)
  • offers a free demo, not a free call — demos produce something tangible
  • the whole email is 6 lines. agency owners are busy. respect that.

what i changed after the first 50 sends:

  • removed "AI-powered" from everything. agencies don't care about AI — they care about results
  • stopped saying "personalized" in the subject line (spam trigger)
  • added the specific SEO score/finding in the first line
  • shortened from 12 lines to 6
