The feeling of losing customers is worse than not having any - Weekly backlog 2020/15

I thought I prepared myself for this. I saw what was happening but still, somewhere in my head, I hoped that it's gonna be different.

I wrote about it that the users of Discount Hunt are "playing the system" and taking advantage of the free trial of the app. Basically, they installed the app, ran their campaign, exported the collected information and removed the app before the trial period ended. I was naive when I thought that maybe 50% of them will keep it for at least a month to pay a few dollars for using it. Some of them did, but it's not close to 50%.

On the other side, this showed me that this is something people are looking for and the core concept of the app is working. So now I have to figure out how to avoid uninstalls once the trial period is over.

I could change the length of the trial period, but I don't think that is a great solution for the long run. I want to provide my customers with something that is valuable for them and they would like to pay for it because of the benefits and not because they can't trick the system. Going from a subscription-based model to a one time purchase version is not sustainable with this product (at least, this is what I think).
I can develop some extra features but what is more important that I should teach my customers how they can use the app to grow their business after, between and during holidays. Those who installed the app this time used it because they wanted to run an Easter egg hunt in their store and I think they removed it for the same reason. Noone is doing Easter egg hunts in the middle of summer. The app can handle more use cases, but my customers don’t think about it, they were focusing on Easter.

I think this is the main "issue" I should solve and the way to do it is by content (on the website, in the app, after they installed the app and created their first session, etc). This is what I'll work on.

Last week I also finished the Mailchimp integration feature for Gift Hunt so this week I'll roll it out and I also have to create some tutorials on how to use it and how it works.

=====

Todo for this week:

  • Create more “how to” content for Discount Hunt - after rolled out the new features
  • Roll out Gift Hunt with Mailchimp integration
  • Create a tutorial about Gift Hunt’s Mailchimp integration
  • Auto play stories feature for Story View
