Plenty of posts tell you that starting a business begins with an idea, buying a domain, identifying customers, and so on.
But I think that there are a few other key steps that are often overlooked. There are other personal and mental changes that you need to make. And it's important to make the right adjustments in life before even considering starting a business.
What are the first steps to starting a business? I would argue that there are 11 personal and mental steps. Let's explore them.
When it comes to starting a business, you need to be able to take responsibility for your actions and be a leader. This means setting the tone for your business and being able to make decisions that will benefit your company. It can be difficult to do this if you're not used to taking on a leadership role, but it's essential to your success.
Being coachable is important in any business, but it's especially important when you're starting out. This means being willing to listen to feedback and take advice from others. You don't have to agree with everything that's said, but you should at least consider it. You may be surprised at how much you can learn from others who have more experience than you.
In order to succeed in business, you need to be able to set your ego aside. This doesn't mean that you have to become a doormat; rather, it means that you need to be able to put the needs of your business first. This can be difficult if you're used to always being right or if you're used to taking charge. But it's essential for your success.
Starting a business is a marathon, not a sprint. It's important to remember this as you move forward. This doesn't mean that you can't take action or that you should only focus on long-term goals; rather, it means that you need to be patient and stay the course even when things get tough.
Believing in yourself is essential when starting a business. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will. This doesn't mean that you have to be cocky or arrogant; it simply means having faith in your abilities and knowing that you can accomplish your goals.
In order to be successful in business, you need to be willing to work hard. This means putting in the time and effort required to make your business a success. It doesn't matter if you're starting a new company or if you're trying to grow an existing business; you need to be willing to work hard and hustle.
This doesn't mean that you have to work all the time; rather, it means being productive and working towards your goals even when things get tough. It also means being able to take action and not waiting for the perfect opportunity. There's no such thing as a perfect opportunity; if you wait for one, you'll never start your business.
Many people think that to start a business, you need to have technical skills. However, many business owners who are talented in their field of expertise have to focus on marketing their business to attract customers. If you're not good at marketing, it's important to learn how to market your business effectively. This doesn't mean that you have to spend a lot of money on marketing; rather, it means learning how to reach your target market and getting your message out there.
However, make use of online courses, networking, and other means to build your marketing knowledge. As you learn and apply yourself, you’ll become an expert.
If you want to be successful in business, you need to change your relationship with money. This doesn't mean that you have to become a greedy person; rather, it means understanding that money is a tool that can help you achieve your goals. It's also important to remember that making money is not the only goal of starting a business; it's important to focus on creating value for your customers.
When you're starting a business, you need to be prepared to sacrifice. And you need to look at the ramifications of such a decision. Because having to put in extra hours to grow your business means less time for your family, friends, and hobbies.
You have to work with your loved ones and keep them informed. And make sure you recognize that the people around you are making sacrifices too.
You have to account for the possibility that your original plans might not work out. So you have to be prepared to pivot and change course.
It's a good idea to have a Plan B in place. That way, if your first idea doesn't work out, you can quickly switch to your second plan and continue moving
One of the most important things to remember when starting a business is that failure is a part of the process. You will make mistakes and you will have setbacks. But it's important to learn from your failures and keep moving forward.
This is easier said than done. You can create support for yourself by reading, listening to podcasts, or talking to other entrepreneurs who have been through the process.
When you build a business, it isn't just about gathering funding or acquiring customers. It's about changing your mindset and developing the skills that you need to be successful. These are the first steps to starting a business.
Now that you understand the importance of changing your mindset, you can better prepare for the challenges ahead. When your head is in the right place, you can deal with the practical issues you may face with resilience.
I agree with some of these, slightly disagree with others and a good number are just too vague. In my experience, #4 (marathon, not sprint) is the most true but #8 (relationship with money) is one that is so true but rarely included on these types of lists (kudos!) except, ha ha, the detail is all wrong. I feel that #6 (work ethic) is basically a tautology: the best way to get things done is to be good at getting things done. It can also easily be in opposition to #4: people with good work ethics tend to sprint and burn themselves out.
