The four filter test I use to validate product ideas fast

I’ve wasted months on ideas that never had a chance.

Now I use a simple four-filter test before building anything.

  1. The problem must be in the audience’s top three priorities.
  2. I must already understand that audience’s world.
  3. They must expect to pay for the kind of solution I’m offering.
  4. The value proposition must be stupid simple.

If any filter fails, I drop the idea.

These four rules saved me months of wasted work.

Which filter do you ignore most often?

  1. 2

Number 1 is one of the most important filters. Some people build products that are neat to use but not solving a big enough problem for a user to be willing to pay for it.

  2. 1

This four-filter approach resonates — filtering early ideas quickly is often where clarity actually begins.

Out of curiosity — when you run ideas through this test, what’s the one signal you use to decide it’s worth building an MVP and bringing it to users?
