The future of work isn't just remote, it's part-time

👋 hello from negotiating a 3-day work week

This allows me the time to live my life (I have too many hobbies) and also gives me time to grow my business. Definitely recommended.

Of course, the extra time helps with getting those pesky chores done too...

Nice! How did that conversation happen? Was it a full-time job you already had or you applied asking for a 3-day work week?

      1. 2

It was a long process. I had applied to them 2 years before, but decided to go for a better offer.
1 year before, I reached out again and said I'd be happy to join if they wanted me for 3 days a week, they said they couldn't manage that.
Then finally they reached out and said they can match my ask. So I quit my full-time position to join them.

During this process I had been applying to other companies and I would say I would like a 3-4 day work week and would get laughed out of the interview.

Now recruiters reach out and I ask them for salary range and working hours. 50% provide a range, nearly everyone ignores my working hours question. Those that answer state they are 5-day work weeks.
Tip for employers, the less information your recruiter gives, the less I proceed with the process.

Back in 2017 I switched a full-time position into a 4-day work week freelance position. This was great too as it allowed me to start the process of what my own company would look like.

Love that, thanks for sharing. Did you find that you had better luck talking to smaller companies/startups? I would bet larger companies struggle a bit more with this type of flexibility.

          1. 2

Yeah, smaller companies understand they often can't compete on salaries or benefits, so they need to find other ways to entice talent.

I think there are lots of reasons larger companies might not want to negotiate here.

            • With larger companies it would need to be approved by so many different people, that they don't seem to even try.
            • They might be scared that if one person does it, will more people ask for it
            • I would also think that larger companies have more applicants, so it's easier to label me 'problem applicant' and move on, rather than understand my perspective.
            • Finally, larger companies are more likely to have people who coast or are not imaginative, hence the laughing out of the room instead of questioning why THEY can't also have a reduced work week.

You definitely hit the nail on the head. I think it would be extremely beneficial for some large companies to try, but too much inertia and status quo to fight against.

I think we'll see startups and small companies really spearheading things here, and over time, it'll start shifting generally accepted practices to the point that some companies will have to follow suit or risk losing talent.

This also allows you to work on your sidehustle without going on a guilt-trip and that you are not giving 100% to your fulltime employer

I wouldn't say the traditional part-time but less set time like the typical 9-5.
What I see is people allowed to be flexible in the sense of doing 4 days a week ( but doing 10 hours per day) or asked to finish a project at their own pace at a given time period.
