The hidden metric that decides if your startup grows or stalls

Most Indie Hackers track:

• Traffic

• Conversion rate

• MRR

• Churn

Very few track this:

Time to intent response.

The time between:

When someone expresses a need

and

When you show up

That gap quietly determines revenue.

Here’s why:

If someone posts:

“Looking for a tool to automate X”

And you reply in 10 minutes → you’re early in the decision cycle.

If you reply 12 hours later → they’ve already chosen.

Same product.

Same price.

Different timing.

Different outcome.

Most of us are optimizing funnels when we should be optimizing response speed.

We think growth is about:

• Better landing pages

• More features

• More content

But often it’s just this:

You weren’t present when the buying decision happened.

That realization changed how I approach distribution completely.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get more traffic?”

I started asking:

“How do I detect buyers while they’re still deciding?”

That shift moved the needle more than months of tweaking copy.

Curious:

How fast can you realistically respond when someone asks for a solution like yours?

If the answer is “whenever I happen to see it” — that might be the bottleneck.

this framing is really useful. in mobile app paid ua it shows up clearly, apple search ads tends to have stronger d7 retention than meta because you're catching someone mid-search, they already decided they want something like your app. meta works but you're meeting people earlier in the decision window, which means your onboarding has to do more of the conversion work. curious if you find the response speed dynamic plays out differently by channel, or is it mostly context-agnostic?

Great point. Channels where intent is already formed, like Apple Search Ads, naturally convert better because the decision window is already open. What we’ve seen across communities is that the same principle applies: when someone is actively asking for a solution, response speed matters far more than the platform itself. If you show up early in that moment, even a small product can convert because the user is already evaluating options. That’s exactly the layer LeadSynth focuses on, surfacing those decision-stage conversations in real time so founders can join them while the decision is still forming: https://leadsynthai.app

Wow, perfect question to segue into a marketing plug????

      Fair point

I share what I’ve learned building.

And yes — I built something around that insight.

But the framing stands even without the product.

If founders aren’t thinking about response latency to demand, they’re leaving growth to luck.

You don’t have to use my tool to fix that.

But you probably need a system.

That’s really interesting. How do you detect such buyers?

I use LeadSynth (https://www.leadsynthai.app/), we detect buying intent on social media by identifying people discussing the problems your product can solve, or looking for services like yours.
