Not sometimes. Not if you're inexperienced.
Every time. To everyone.

There’s a name for it in psychology — desirability bias.

The moment an idea feels exciting, your brain stops being an analyst and becomes a lawyer. It doesn’t ask "is this good?"
It asks "how do I prove this is good?"

And it’s extremely good at that job.

How You Accidentally Validate Garbage

You talk to 5 friends. They say they’d use it.
→ Your brain logs that as market validation.

You post in a community. People say "this is interesting."
→ Your brain logs that as demand.

You google competitors and find some.
→ "Proof of market."

You find none.
→ "Blue ocean opportunity."

Every single data point gets bent to fit the conclusion you already reached the moment the idea felt good.

This is the trap.

Smart People Fall Harder

I’ve done this. Multiple times.

Built things with genuine conviction.
Put in real effort.
Executed well.

And still ended up with something nobody wanted.

Not because I was lazy with research.
Because I was doing the wrong kind of research.

Research designed to confirm, not to break.

The brutal truth:

The smarter you are, the better you are at this self-deception.

Smart people are just better lawyers.

The Question That Changed Everything

One question changed how I work:

"What would have to be true for this idea to be completely wrong?"

Not:

  • Why will this work
  • Who is this for

Specifically:

Where is this fragile?
What assumption kills it?
What does the failure case look like?

Most founders never ask this.

Not because they're dumb —
because the brain actively resists it.

It feels like betraying your own idea.
Like you're being negative.

You're not.

You're being rigorous.

And that resistance?
That’s the exact signal you’re thinking correctly.

The Pattern I Kept Seeing

I’ve built multiple products as a solo founder.

Each one taught me something.

But the pattern wasn’t bad execution.

It was this:

Validated too gently.

Founders building with hope instead of evidence.

Months of real work —
pointed at the wrong target
because nobody forced an honest answer early enough.

Why I Built Syra

So I built something specifically to fix this:

It’s called Syra.

The premise is simple:

Remove founder bias from idea evaluation.

Two modes:

  • Quick Mode → build / kill / wait + a 48-hour proof test
  • Deep Mode → stress-tests market, moat, risks, and assumptions

It doesn’t ask leading questions.
It doesn’t try to validate your idea.

It tries to break it.

Because that’s the only honest service.

What I’ve Noticed Since

Ideas that survive real falsification come out sharper.

Founders either:

  • Kill fast and save months
  • Or build with earned conviction, not emotional conviction

Both outcomes are good.

Both are better than the alternative:

    This resonates a lot, especially the idea that validation often becomes confirmation without us noticing.

    What I have been seeing in practice is slightly different but related. Even when you try to “break” an idea, you can still stay inside your own perspective.

    For example, people might say they have a problem, but not strongly enough to change their behavior or pay for a solution. That gap is easy to miss, even with honest intent.

    I am building in a different space, and I have started focusing less on whether an idea sounds right, and more on whether people are already taking some form of action to solve that problem.

    If they are not doing anything today, it usually turns out to be weaker than it first appears.

    Curious, in your experience with Syra, how do you distinguish between a problem that sounds real and one that people will actually act on?

      Yeah this is a good point.

      Breaking an idea logically isn’t the same as seeing if people actually care enough to act. I’ve missed that before too — people say it’s a problem, but they’re not really doing anything about it.

      Lately I’m trying to look more at behavior:
      what are they already doing to solve it, how much effort they’re putting in, what happens if they ignore it.

      If there’s no real action, it’s probably weaker than it sounds.

      I think Syra needs to push more in that direction instead of just reasoning about the idea.
