Four hours ago I posted here asking for feedback on getting my app, Buck The Critics, to its first 1,000 users. The response reframed how I think about the whole product.
Buck is a social reviews platform for movies, TV, games and books, built around a trust-weighted rating system based on a closed group of friends. But it also has a feature I'd always thought of as a 'bonus': Buck AI. One tap and you get interesting trivia on whatever you're consuming - easter eggs, gaffes, controversies, that kind of thing.
It was pointed out to me... by several people... that this "bonus feature" is probably my strongest USP. A social app has a chicken-and-egg problem. Most of the value depends on the user bringing their friends, which is a lot to ask of someone who just downloaded an unknown app. I need to lead with something that gives instant value before anyone commits their social circle. Buck AI is exactly that. I'd failed to recognise my best hook.
One suggestion was to let users share trivia straight to their own socials the way they can already share reviews. I looked into it and it's technically not feasible for now. But it sparked another idea: I could use that same trivia to market the app myself, on autopilot.
So this morning I built it in Claude. A scheduled task runs every Monday at 6am. It then...
Looks up the week's notable anniversaries and events (celebrity birthdays, 30 years since Braveheart etc..)
Checks my trivia cache for anything relevant (I cache every AI query response so I can serve repeat answers for free)
Where it finds a match, it generates a trivia card and drafts a tweet in Buffer for me to approve.
Four ready-made trivia posts a week that show off the feature and give people a reason to follow, for about 10p in AI credits and almost no effort from me.
Genuinely grateful to everyone who weighed in, you moved my thinking more in one thread than a week of staring at analytics.
Has anyone else found their side feature turned out to be the main draw? Curious how common this is.
BTW if you're into movie trivia and/or want to see my first trivia post, give me a follow on X https://x.com/BuckTheCritics
This is exactly the problem Featly is built to solve — the valuable feature hiding in plain sight that usage data surfaces before you have to guess. You found Buck AI through community feedback, but most founders never get that lucky. What would have changed if you'd seen the usage disparity between the core app and Buck AI from day one?
That's a great example of users revealing what they actually value. I'd keep validating whether Buck AI is simply the acquisition hook or whether it's also the reason people keep coming back. Those are different jobs, and your long-term positioning depends on which one it really performs.
Thanks for the input. Yes i track in mixpanel how often Buck AI is invoked. I've also got an exit survey i send if people stop using the app but thinking on it that's abit of a defeatist approach. I'll add a short survey for users to fill in after they've used the app for a couple weeks and ask which features they value the most
I like that you're measuring behavior alongside asking for feedback.
One thing I'd watch is whether the survey tells you what people value or simply what they remember. Sometimes the feature people mention most isn't the one that actually keeps them coming back.
Comparing what users say with what they repeatedly use might end up being the more interesting signal.
I agree. Im currently adding analytics to all of the apps features so i can view which my users are actually using.
I'm glad it resonated.
Reading your reply gave me one thought about what those analytics might reveal beyond feature usage. I'd rather explain it in the context of what you're building than try to reduce it to a few comments here.
