The inspiring (and short) story of FeedbackFish

I came across this story while doing some market research for my own product, and thought it was worthy of a share.

In July 2020, 4 friends got together and decided to set themselves a challenge; to build a product in 72 hours. They settled on a tiny but laser-focussed idea, to create a small and simple widget you could drop into any site and start collecting feedback from users straight away, and they called it Feedback Fish.

Oh, and they also livestreamed the whole thing to 1000's of users while they were building it, and ultimately reached #1 on ProductHunt.

Now, I'm not sure how they're doing with sales currently (although reaching #1 on PH you can pretty much guarantee at least a handful of subscriptions). There doesn't seem to be much development on FeedbackFish, and at least one of the founders has moved their focus to other things since, but it's a good reminder that:

  1. There IS a market for small and tightly focussed ideas, executed well. (Their USP was actually that they were a more lightweight version of Intercom / Canny and people seemed to love that).

  2. Tight timelines = creativity. You won't have time to think about nice-to-have's, you just have time to focus on the core product and the goal is always to package your core offering first and send that into the wild. (They also validated the idea by charging a simple monthly flat fee right from the start).

  3. Building in public can warm up your audience before launch (I didn't really know live builds were a thing but looks like they are!).
