The Journey of OpenQR: A Solo Founder’s SaaS Story

Nerijus Oftas, a 39-year-old Lithuanian software developer and Senior Developer at UK-based EngageCraft, is also the solo founder of OpenQR, a web-based QR code platform. His inspiration came from a freelancing project where he discovered that many QR code tools were either overpriced, overly complex, or disabled dynamic codes after subscription expiry. Determined to offer a sustainable alternative, he built OpenQR.
Launched in June 2023, OpenQR allows users to create, manage, and track both static and dynamic QR codes. Its standout features include editable destination URLs, real-time analytics, branding options, API access, and diverse code types. Unlike many competitors, OpenQR ensures dynamic QR codes remain functional even after trial periods, displaying a brief "Powered by OpenQR" overlay instead.
Despite initial marketing challenges, Nerijus has grown the platform to nearly 900 users and thousands of monthly scans, primarily through organic content and targeted LinkedIn Ads. He continues to improve the service based on user feedback, aiming to make professional QR code management accessible to businesses of all sizes.
