Our website Plutio.com has a live-chat widget with a gif of me waving, ever so subtly (I guess?).
I woke up this morning to the email attached.
Listening to feedback is how we ensure the future of our product is shaped to suit our customer's needs. But, this one piece of "Feedback??" shocked me...
I'm honestly not sure what to make of it. Do you agree with them? Am I just taking it toooo personally?
That's nasty!
I personally hate these chat widgets in general as a user. They are intrusive, annoying, some of them have all kinds of stupid sounds and so on. I think they are a huge UX killer (but I know they are likely to convert in some cases).
However, I think yours is a cool, non-intrusive and fun implementation of it. It's pretty small, doesn't make any sound, it shows a human face and it's also animated. It's pretty nice.
I think this was an unfortunate moment when a user annoyed by chat widgets as a whole had a bad day and it so happened that they took it out on your website.
But here's a valuable lesson anyways: give users an option to completely dismiss that widget if they want.
Thank you Josan.
You made a really good point.
I've also just created a ticket to allow dismissing the chat widget, a simple change but assume will make a big difference.
I feel you won’t take this too personally if this GIF isn't a representation of you.
Maybe you are right, but I have learnt that it is better to show a person than a bot, unless you think otherwise?
nothing is personal. how can it be? He's knows nothing about you.
some people will like the GIF. Some won't. It's certainly not "ridiculous". Personally I'm pretty indifferent towards it.
Thank you! Glad you like it :)
It might have been a bit of an "ouch" moment. Personally I would try to see it as valuable feedback. Maybe there's been others who have felt the same but not taken the time to let you know, maybe you have lost customers before for the same reason.
I had a look at the site. I'm not sure how I feel about it, on one hand it's quirky and a bit of fun, and shows that there is a human behind the site, but also it could be a bit intrusive if you can't dismiss it.
Maybe the compromise is to add a close button...?
I also get the same feeling of distracting and slightly intrusive to some extent.
A close button sounds like a good idea.
Thank you guys, I will add a close button to dismiss the chat widget :)

If the GIF stopped playing or play with a delay of maybe a minute each time, would it help?
