The metaverse is a new word for an old idea

There's no way I'm ever going to be in the Metaverse. It's an unimaginative idea for people who don't understand why people want to use technology.

It's not to replicate the physical world - but to augment it. If the metaverse was a unique world, particular to the digital realm and akin to a video game, it'd be more interesting. But instead, the metaverse is looking like the digital version of the suburbs.

The phrase MMORPG - massively multiplayer only roleplaying game - is definitely a mouthful and doesn't have a good rep with people. The term "metaverse" makes it seem a lot more appealing to people who didn't grow up playing World of Warcraft and Runescape.

In many ways, we are already living in a metaverse. If I think about a normal day, I wake up and fire up my laptop, I use it to work, to meet other makers in the WBE Space. Then I have lunch or dinner watching Netflix and then scroll through twitter before going to bed...

I think about that too sometimes. We're increasingly making our lives digital and putting more meaning into it.

And I totally agree with this quote: “There is an easy seductiveness to stories that cast a technology as brand-new.”

We're often willing to look past the old ideas that inform novelty or "innovation."
