The Mystery of Telegram

After using Telegram extensively for the past 7+ years, I wanted to take a deep dive into the company and product.

I did a long, detailed write-up, going from its market position, features, UX, and brand.

I'd be happy to hear your thoughts.

Telegram recently introduced the "similar channels" features that helps users find other like minded communities. This was a great addition, because Telegram can feel bare if you are not proactively joining channels. And even at that the search function can be hard to navigate. What I've learned on my 3+ years on the app is there is a much greater sense of community than one might realize. One the problems is that to organize these various channels, one needs premium, because following too many channels can feel like a vortex of unread messages if you don't have the folder feature. I have found it to be the best app for finding information and learning about the topics because you're focused in on what's right in front of you versus X which is always pulling your attention one way or another. The Telegram desktop feature is also amazing.
