As a software engineer who has been building web applications for years across fitness, education, e-commerce, and other industries, I’ve tried a lot of tools and subscriptions. I’ve narrowed down my paid subscriptions to just two services that accelerate my development process and improve my marketing strategies.
Why I Switched from ChatGPT to Claude
I initially used ChatGPT for development assistance, but found it often complicated my workflow rather than giving me a simplified answer. The code it generated required reworking to integrate with my existing modules and architecture.
After these frustrations, I decided to try Anthropics Claude, and the difference has been significant. One project that made me switch was when I needed to build an email templating system that could convert raw HTML with embedded logic (like for loops and conditional statements) into dynamically generated emails in .NET Core.
ChatGPT provided overly complex solutions that didn’t align with my needs, Claude helped me design a clean class with precisely the features I needed. The system now successfully parses HTML templates with embedded code to replace content with email data, and integrates with my existing codebase.
How Canva Pro Transformed My Marketing Capabilities
The second subscription that is super helpful is Canva Pro. I paid for the yearly subscription and I usually don’t do that. As the developer of my own SaaS product Pagepalooza, I needed to work on marketing materials myself to align with my vision.
Canva Pro has been valuable for:
Creating professional blog header images
Producing YouTube shorts and social media content
Designing marketing materials
Why These Two Subscriptions Provide the Best ROI
What makes these two subscriptions valuable is how they address the two most time consuming aspects of software development beyond the coding itself:
Speeding up development with assistance (Claude)
Visual asset creation and marketing (Canva Pro)
As a solo developer or part of a small team, these tools effectively give me capabilities that would otherwise require additional specialized team members.
By focusing on just Claude for development assistance and Canva Pro for design and marketing, I’ve optimized my workflow and expenses while improving my output quality.
While I have not used Canva, I can vouch for Claude! I downloaded it specifically because I needed help with complex coding concepts and got exactly what I needed. I also recommend Microsoft's Copilot for coding assistance. It is not as comprehensive as Claude, but it does a great job explaining simpler concepts and solutions. It is also free for long-term use, unlike Claude's free version, which only allows a few inquiries at a time.
OMG! I'm going through the same complication! Thank you so much for this post. I'm a beginner, and this is going to help most significantly. Thank you :)
I use Canva for everything from video production to branding (logos etc.) It's so huge I don't think I've even scratched the surface, often I'll be trying to do something visual and think 'I wonder if Canva can do that' and yes it can :) Thanks for your tips on Claude, I use OpenAI for this sort of thing currently and haven't really delved into Claude, might have to give this a go.
