Been building side projects for 4 years. shipped maybe 2.
my github is a graveyard. saas for freelancers (stopped at auth). chrome extension (stopped after landing page). cli tool (quit when it got hard). newsletter (4 issues). probably 10 other things i can't even remember.
always the same pattern: week 1 excited, week 2 still going, week 3 skip a day, week 4 skipping is the habit, week 5 "i'll get back to it," week 6 new idea sounds better. repeat.
Things i tried that failed:
public build logs. tweeted progress for a month. got likes from other indie hackers. felt good. still quit. likes aren't accountability. they're dopamine.
discord servers. hundreds of people posting. easy to disappear. nobody notices when you stop.
shipping challenges. "30 days to ship." made it to day 12. nobody followed up.
public commitments. "i'll ship by friday or donate $100 to a politician i hate." when i failed i just didn't post. no real consequence.
the problem with all of these: no single person was watching me specifically. it was all broadcast accountability. easy to hide in the crowd.
what actually worked:
my friend and i made a deal last year. every night we'd text each other: "did you work on your project today?"
that's it. yes or no. every day.
i shipped more in 3 months than i had in 2 years. not because i was more motivated. i just didn't want to type "no" to someone who was actually paying attention.
the difference is dyadic accountability. one person. watching you specifically. expecting a response. not a feed. not a group. one person who will notice if you disappear.
so i turned it into an app.
it's called duuo. simple concept:
set a goal ("ship mvp by march" or "code 1 hour daily")
add a partner (friend or get matched with a stranger)
check in daily
they see your check-ins. or your silence.
they can nudge you when you go quiet
that's the core. streaks and badges exist but they're not the point. the point is another human who notices.
some stuff i learned building it:
matching matters more than i thought. tried interest-based matching first (both building saas = good match). didn't work. timezone matching worked better. if your partner is asleep when you're struggling, the accountability is delayed. delayed accountability is weak accountability.
one nudge per day is the sweet spot. more feels like nagging. less is ignorable. one nudge with a custom message ("yo you good?") hits right.
the check-in moment matters. most people fail at the same time every day. for me it's 9pm when i'm tired and netflix sounds better than fixing bugs. if my partner messages at 8:45pm, i actually open vs code.
results so far:
been running a beta for a few months. small sample but the pattern is clear:
users with active partners: 73% check-in rate
users going solo: 21% check-in rate
average streak with partner: 23 days
average streak solo: 4 days
the partner is the product. everything else is just infrastructure.
why i'm posting here:
looking for indie hackers who have the same problem. you know how to build. you just don't ship. if that's you, try it with me.
it's freemium. free tier has everything you need.
or forget the app. just find someone in this thread and text each other every night. that works too.
the insight isn't the app. it's that broadcast accountability doesn't work. one person watching you does.
happy to answer questions or hear why you think this won't work. roast it if you want.
