I actually like freelancing.
I like the independence.
I like choosing what I work on.
I like solving problems for clients.
I like being responsible for the outcome.
But there’s one part I’ve never completely gotten comfortable with:
The constant need to put yourself out there.
Even after you’ve been doing this for a while, freelancing still requires you to:
follow up with clients
have uncomfortable conversations
negotiate pricing
jump on calls
network
maintain relationships
talk about your work
ask for referrals
keep yourself visible
And if you're an introvert, some of that can be genuinely exhausting.
There are days when I'd much rather spend three hours solving a technical problem than spend 30 minutes on a call talking about myself. 😂
But freelancing has taught me something:
Being introverted doesn't mean you can't build strong client relationships.
It just means you may approach relationships differently.
I don't need to be the most talkative person on the call.
I need to listen carefully.
Ask better questions.
Communicate clearly.
Follow through.
And make the client feel like they're in good hands.
Honestly, I think some of those things have actually become strengths for me over time.
I'm still not someone who naturally enjoys networking or constantly being "visible."
But I've gotten much better at doing the things that matter without trying to become someone I'm not.
I'm curious about other freelancers here:
If you're an introvert, what's the part of freelancing you've found hardest to get comfortable with?
And has it gotten easier with experience?
