The psychology of free vs $19 — why my free sample might kill my paid product

i made 50 agency contacts free. the full list of 798 is $19.

the question im wrestling with: does the free sample help or hurt?

the case for free samples

  • removes trust barrier (see the data before paying)
  • proves quality (verify emails yourself)
  • creates reciprocity (i gave you something, now consider buying)
  • generates word of mouth (free things spread faster)

the case against

  • 50 might be enough for some buyers (they never need the full 798)
  • free anchors the perceived value at zero
  • people who download free things rarely convert to paid
  • the sample shows the format, so someone technical could scrape their own

what the data says

i have zero downloads so far. so i cant answer empirically yet.

my gut: the free sample is net positive because it solves the trust problem. nobody buys data from a stranger. but someone who verified 5 emails from the free sample trusts the remaining 748.

the real test comes when someone downloads the free sample and then either buys or doesnt. thats the conversion data that matters.
