i have a $19 agency contact list with 798 entries across 54 countries. ive also given away 50 of those contacts for free. heres why.
the logic
nobody buys from an unknown brand without proof. especially not a CSV file they cant preview. the free sample lets them verify the data quality — real emails, real agencies, real countries — before spending $19.
the risk
what if the free 50 contacts are enough? what if nobody needs the other 748? what if giving away the product for free literally kills the paid version?
the math
50 contacts covers maybe 6-7 countries. if youre doing serious outreach, you need coverage across 20+ countries minimum. the free sample is a taste, not a meal.
but heres the thing — i have zero data on whether anyone has even downloaded the free sample. gumroad shows $0 revenue and no follower count. i dont know if the strategy is working because i have no traffic data.
what im actually testing
this isnt really about free vs paid. its about whether anyone cares enough to click the link at all. 41 IH posts, 4 dev.to articles, all with links to the free sample. if nobody downloads even the free version, the problem isnt pricing. its distribution.

have you tried the "free sample to paid conversion" strategy? what was your conversion rate?
