Hey 👋. My name is Tiago and I am the host of the Wannabe Entrepreneur Podcast. The podcast actually starts days after I quit my job to focus 💯 in my projects and I have been doing that for the past months...
One of the things I discovered from my own experience and by speaking with many other entrepreneurs in my interviews is that being an entrepreneur is more a lifestyle than a profession. In this post I will try to go deeper in understanding why that is...
Is there an actual purpose?
Sorry to start in such a philosophical path, but I will get there
As an engineer I tend to look to life through the eyes of science. I subscribe to all the classics like Big Bang, Natural Selection a round Earth 🌎... And because of that I don't believe that there is a defined purposed for us, Humans...
At first this was kind of a scary thought to have but after thinking more carefully about it I was actually relieved 😌
We can make our own purpose
Think about it... If some entity would come up with a mission for us that would really affect our freedom. What
If it was a purposed we did not like???
Finding my own purpose
After establishing that it was up to me to decide my life purpose the pressure was on to find it. One can start with the classic
Enjoy Life
Which is a very valid one but by itself it seems very empty... Will it really matter in 500 years? I needed something with more substance.
Leave your mark in the world
Something that will out live you, something that if it was not for you it would not exist! Something unique!
Yup, that was it for me
There was always something missing
In my interview with Cristi he told me that he worked in many nice companies before but all of them had the same problem...
They were not his company
In most entrepreneurs there is this urge to create something. We try to justify it by throwing reasons around like: being your own boss, becoming rich, writing on indie hackers... But deep down the reason most of us do this is because it's our purpose to create something new!
Would love to hear your thoughts in this... What is your purpose?
Cheers,
From the biological standpoint, the purpose of life is to live.
I totally agree with It's not my company. That's one of the reasons I want to be an entrepreneur. Also, enjoying and being able to choose what I do.
My purpose is to do something that I actually enjoy doing! Never really loved my day job and never been able to bend myself fully into something I enjoy...
yep, it is really a hard question;
depending on how you frame it, you can think about it in terms of operational purpose, that is in the case of an IHs, to build sustainable biz around one's skills and interests (taking into account the reality and environment such as living in San Francisco vs in a remote village in Pakistan); so the close you are to your true nature, the deeper is your self-awareness, the better you know what you like, your values, dreams, beliefs, etc. the more precisely you can frame it; skills are obvious: writing, research, communication, coding...
but there is this concept of Big Purpose that is very elusive and vague yet worthy of pondering and searching for; it is more spiritual and quite the same for most people: do something useful for others to make their experience better, contribute to human civilization, be a force for change, good; The Good defined as harmony, order, light, love as opposed to chaos, pain, suffering; essentially help to build Heaven on Earth, and this concept is >3000 years old, so after all, All people may have a shared Purpose, they just do not see it clearly.
