cold email looks free. you have gmail, you have a keyboard, you have prospects. $0/mo to run.
except its not free. heres what it actually costs.
time cost
scraping 798 agency contacts: ~30 hours over 2 weekends
writing the scanning + personalization pipeline: ~10 hours
setting up SMTP, delays, follow-ups: ~5 hours
monitoring and debugging: ~5 hours ongoing
total: ~50 hours of engineering time
at even $20/hr thats $1,000 of labor for a system that sent 367 emails and got 3 replies.
opportunity cost
those 50 hours could have been spent:
instead i built a technically impressive email pipeline that gmail killed after 14 days.
reputation cost
gmail restricted my entire account. not just sending — everything. IMAP, SMTP, the whole service. appeal under review since mar 30.
some of those 367 recipients probably marked me as spam. thats permanent reputation damage on that email address.
the lesson
cold email at scale is not free. its expensive in time, opportunity, and reputation. the only scenario where its worth it: high-ticket offers ($500+/mo) where one closed deal pays for 100 hours of pipeline building.
for a $19 CSV? the math is terrible. i need 53 sales to break even on the time invested. cold email got me 0.
