The Smart Seller’s Guide to 3D Printing in 2025 by 3DAPI

Introduction
I'm the cofounder of 3DAPI, a global infrastructure for 3D print-on-demand. While doing market research for our growing business, I ended up learning a lot about what works and what doesn’t for sellers. So it only feels right to share what I’ve learned with the community.

What This Type of Business Usually Entails (TL;DR)
There are several ways to make money with 3D printing, whether as a side hustle or a full-time business. The three most common models are:

  1. Digital Designers
These are the artists who create and sell STL files. Established designers often offer commercial licenses so customers can sell physical prints of their designs.

  2. Print Farms
These businesses run multiple printers and fulfill orders, sometimes using print-on-demand software. They handle the full process including packaging, support removal, and shipping.

  3. Resellers or Dropshippers
This is a newer model. These businesses pick a niche, purchase digital design collections, and sell printed versions. They may use marketplaces, their own websites, or sell in person at events.

Some businesses mix elements from each of these models or carve out a unique niche like digital design services, marketplace operations, or influencer-based sales.

What Niches Are Currently Popular (Finding Your Niche)

Niche selection is crucial for both designers and resellers.
Top niches

  • Toys, especially articulated and cute designs
  • Home decor such as vases, lamps, and utility holders
  • Game miniatures
  • Woodworking jigs and tools
  • Custom and hobby-specific items, like bike accessories

Research methods
Use social media to check hashtags and influencer posts. Look at bestseller lists on Thangs, Makerworld, Printables, MyMiniFactory, Etsy, and Amazon.

What’s Worth Printing (Cost Calculation and Pricing)
Not every design is worth printing. Do some rough math before selling.

Key factors
Material cost: filament cost per gram, including supports
Machine time: estimated cost based on printer lifespan and power
Labor: time spent post-processing and packing
Fees and shipping: platform fees (like Etsy’s 8%) and delivery costs

Example
100g model = $0.50 filament
4-hour print = $0.20 electricity
30 mins labor = $5
Fees and shipping = $4
Total: ~$9.70
Target price: ~$24.99 (healthy margin if competition sells at $30–50)

Social Media: Marketing and Client Funnels
I'm not a marketing expert, but modern tools and AI can help a lot here. The main decision is whether to sell via your own website or through a marketplace. Social media works as a funnel, with platforms like Instagram and TikTok being particularly effective.
In-person sellers (such as at local fairs) may not need a strong online funnel.

Personal Advice (Take It With a Grain of Salt)
Reselling and dropshipping is the fastest route to revenue. It requires minimal upfront investment and allows you to focus entirely on marketing.
Two key points

  • Customers don’t care that it’s 3D printed. Focus on the product’s value, not the process.
  • Use a reliable print-on-demand service or partner with a local print farm. Start small if needed, but scale production quickly as orders grow.

The Fastest Way to Set Everything Up: 3Dapi with Instagram
Many print-on-demand providers are clunky. Large ones need manual order entry. Smaller ones integrate with stores but only ship from one country, leading to expensive cross-border shipping.

Our solution at 3Dapi
We connect multiple vetted print farms across different regions. Your customer’s order is printed locally, saving time and shipping costs. Order management is automatic.

Setup steps

  • Create an account (takes one minute)
  • Upload the designs you want to sell
  • Once approved, you'll see your production cost and can set your retail price

We charge only a transaction fee. No upfront costs or subscriptions.
