I enjoy finding old forgotten stuff on the Internet and trying to make it work.
Forgotten projects, old software. It's so much fun to actually get something to work.
The other week, I discovered the nostalgia of Winamp. Ah! The beautiful days of playing MP3's.
I thought to myself - wouldn’t it be fun if there was a way to stream Spotify in Winamp? Remix the past and present?
Well, it turns out that Spotify actually made a tribute to Winamp - and it was called “Spotiamp.” Yes. A engineer at Spotify actually made an officially supported tribute back in 2013!
So - I thought to myself - does this still exist? People on Reddit said that it still worked back in 2019, so surely I could find a link somewhere. The official Spotiamp website now has viruses on it - so don’t go there.
Turns out - it’s still hosted on the good ole Web Archive. Spotiamp 0.2 (Spotiamp 0.2.1 isn’t safe)
So - I took the risky plunge to download and install it. It worked! The next step was to enter my login info. 😱 I took a deep breath - and I did. Redditors are usually reputable when it comes to niche stuff like this.
I got a login notification on my Spotify account - which was a good sign.
And Wow! It actually worked. I can listen to music Winamp style with my Spotify playlists.
It’s even got that old Spotify green. It works too! I’ve been listening to my playlists in this old school wonder.
Now - I am in no way recommending doing this. I’m using a 7 year old - no longer supported Spotify player that I used my Login info for. In other words, if my account becomes compromised - it will be my own dang fault. I took the risk. If I lose 7 years of music - that’s 100% my fault!!
What about you? What old software have you resurrected? What old forgotten internet crumbs have you found! I'd love to hear your story.

Winamp, wow, major flashback! 🤩 I remember the moment when I installed it on my very first computer back in the days.
Another gem, since we are currently talking in the music niche, is Limewire. Yeah, I am guilty, I downloaded way to much music there. 😅
It is always hard to imagine that nowadays kids grow up paying $9,99/month for a spotify account, getting access to millions of tracks just like that. When I grew up I was buying every single track I liked (yes, I know I just said I was downloading them via Limewire, but when I started to DJ and produce my own music at the age of 14 my mind shifted and I started buying the music I wanted to play) and put it on my iPod Classic (another major flashback, still have at my desk, it is working and probably will last forever, can not wait to show it to my future kids).
Nevertheless, love your content, big fan of your newsletter, keep at it!
Yeah! Winamp is awesome. I hope it comes back in some capacity. Haha - I remember Limewire. THOSE were the days . . .
Or Grooveshark!
It's hard to believe how much Spotify/Apple Music have absolutely changed the space.
memories....
