The struggle of finding a remote job

Hi all,

I’ve been an Digital Nomad (working remotely) + IndieHacker now for a year.

I am super happy living this life and putting my energy in my own startups, even though there is not much revenue right now. It is about the passion, learnings, and diversity that give me huge fulfilment.

But, 6 months ago I meet a girl and I fell in love. I went to her home country to stay with her for 3 months, and she quit her job to travel with me.

The last 2 months, she is applying at least 5 times a day, but without success. She applied already more than 300(!) times.

Most companies do not reply, but some do. She got a few assignments and spend a lot of time to deliver a perfect result. But unfortunately, without result.

I even made a web scraper to automate getting related jobs. But a lot is from the USA where it is somehow really hard to get hired (since she’s from Panama).

She studied 6 year to be an Architect.
She did an additional 1-year master in Valencia for Architecture and communications.
She have 1 year of experience working for the government being an Architect and doing administrations.

She prefers a role as a 3D modeller or an interior designer.
If this is not possible, she wants to do marketing or administrative activities. But she prefers a career in her profession.

We tried multiple ways of applying:

  • send an email
  • get in contact with a founder or HR at LinkedIn
  • apply on the website itself

At this point, we are getting financial troubles. I am supporting her in many ways as much as I can, but especially as a starting IndieHacker I’m not rich 😅

By this post I want to ask if you know any remote positions available for 3D modelling or interior/exterior design. Or if you know someone who might need someone in this position, I would love to get in contact.

Any other advice is also more than welcome!

The next steps:

  • keep applying —> at least 10 times a day
  • open a Fiverr account
  • open an UpWork account
  • I’m creating a website for her to try to drive leads in interior design, so I can pass them to her

    Hi @JustinFransen

The strange thing with the job market is that on one end, companies complain about the lack of good candidates and on the other end, good candidates cannot find best-fit jobs for whatever reason.

Whilst we do not provide jobs at https://skilledup.life, we provide Experience and Skills to improve career prospects.

It seems your girlfriend has good Experience, yet for whatever reason, is struggling to land a job. I can suggest the following:

    • Sign up with us and seek additional Experiences, either to enhance the current skillset or in another area.
    • This will also demonstrate that your girlfriend has been proactive whilst job hunting.
    • We have case studies where this has worked.

Please note she cannot earn through us, gain benefits in kind and no promises are made on paid work after the Volunteer Term ends.

The Volunteer Term could be as low as 1 hr per day for 3 months.

    Just a thought.

    All the best
    Manoj

I don't know anyone who's looking for an architect/3D artist. So in the scope of any other advice, keep applying for jobs without relying on Fiverr or Upwork. Fiverr is not newcomer friendly afaik. Upwork is a total money trap.

When you said 3D, https://www.indiehackers.com/product/threedee this one come to my mind directly. Something like this would look good in the portfolio while potentially generating money.

NFTs could be another alternative, I'm not suggesting to mint something without knowing anyone in the space but a collaboration with people in that space may work better. Just food for thought.

Thanks @Rusted! Yes I am also not really drawn at first to Fiverr and Upwork, but we are getting kind of desperate...

Thanks for sharing ThreeDee aswel. Looks cool!

Never thought about NFTs, but why not? Why not NFT 3D-models?
The only thing I question: what would that differ from a marketplace already around selling 3D-models?

My girlfriend doesn't know anything about NFTs. Of course, she's willing to learn, but I think the focus is now on "selling" herself for the good skillset she has (AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, Revit, e.g.).

She just want to work, keep developing herself within a company and first live again with a stable financial situation.

I spent the day on upwork out of desperation. Made $0 and upwork wants money to let me send more proposals.

I don't know much about NFTs either. What I believe, it's not about art really, rather how good it can be backed financially. Meanwhile keeping it aesthetically pleasing. That's why I suggested a collab. Some people out there willing to invest and have money to do so, yet don't know how to design.

Hope she'll land a job without needing to jump these hoops. I wish you both the best.
