There's a weird gap nobody talks about - the space between building and being known for it
Honest question I've been sitting with for a while.
I ship things consistently. Not once in a while,
like actually every day. Features, fixes, decisions,
learnings. Real building.
But if someone wanted to understand who I am
as a builder - what do I actually point to?
GitHub? Doesn't capture half of what building
actually involves.
LinkedIn? Built for job titles, not for builders.
Twitter? Only works if you've been out here
from the very start.
Portfolio? Shows what you launched. Not who you are
as a builder. Not the daily habit. Not the growth.
There's this weird gap - the work is real,
the consistency is real, but the picture of
the journey just... doesn't exist anywhere.
I kept hitting this wall and couldn't stop
thinking about it. So I started building BuiltBy --
the idea is your daily building becomes a
living public identity. Not a portfolio. Not a resume.
Just the real story of someone who builds.
The launch gets remembered.
The journey that made it possible - nobody sees.
Still early days. But I'm curious -
does anyone else feel this gap?

This resonates hard. I'm building 30 apps in public and blogging the journey on Substack -- and you're right, none of the existing platforms capture the messy middle. The 11pm debugging sessions, the pivot decisions, the 'this took 3 days not 3 hours' reality. Writing raw daily logs comes closest to showing the real texture, but it's still fragmented across platforms.

This gap is real. GitHub shows artifacts, not decisions. LinkedIn is resume formatting. Twitter is hot takes. None of it captures the actual texture of building — the thing you figured out at 11pm, the tradeoff you made and why, the three things you tried before the one that worked.
The closest thing I've found is consistent build logs: short, specific, dated. Not polished. Just honest notes about what happened. Over time they compound into something that actually shows who you are as a builder. The audience problem is real though — most platforms weren't built for this kind of content.
