Thin Platforms
The Microsoft and Stripe developer keynotes were both examples of the rise of Thin Platforms

There are so many benefits to thin clients. Better security for sure; but also they cost less and are way more manageable for a single person.
Scale is another component:
"Using thin client architecture, you can easily scale up through the deployment of virtual desktops. In addition to the benefits typical of a thin client setup, a virtual desktop environment enables you to allow users to bring their own device. The server used for the various thin clients in the office can also be used as a full-fledged virtual desktop base, giving seasonal workers or temporary contractors a simple way to connect and get work done." - Fortinet
Let's go, team thin!
Thin clients have won this round easy. With Microsoft Teams, app developers don't need to even worry about their app being downloaded. As long as someone is using Teams, they can use the app and the dev doesn't need access to the user's device.
And as OP mentions Stripe i.e devs don't have access to the financial data, but instead interact with an abstracted data layer.
I'm glad thick clients are losing the war. Too much malware and connectors..
