I always struggle to maintain small talk with family & friends when they don't work in tech.
Every conversation leads to some questionable statements and opinions they have about the industry.
Over the past few months, I've started keeping track of my favourite moments 😂
1️⃣ Me: Tells them I work from home
Them 2 weeks later: Hey, since you’re not doing anything at home today, can you pick me up from the airport?
2️⃣ "How dodgy is Apple. It's like they know when I buy a phone, then 3 months later decide to release a new one. Surely this is illegal".
3️⃣ "I reckon even I could start a YouTube channel and make millions. Vlogging's not even a real job, so how hard could it be?"
4️⃣ "So Lachlan, have you build a website that prints you money yet?"
5️⃣ "I have a legitimate idea for an app. It's Uber for insert unnecessary use case here. All you'd need to do is build it and we'd be rich".
6️⃣ Dad introducing me to someone: "This is Lachlan, he works in IT"
7️⃣ Catching up with an older family member
Me: I'd love to spend a few years traveling when borders open
Them: Well, you need to decide whether you want to work hard and make good money, or if you want to travel and then be broke
Me: Wot
It's moments like these that make me truly appreciate the value of platforms like Twitter and Indie Hackers 💕
I'm glad to have a small network of like-minded people I consider my close friends.
I'd also love to know if you have any of your own examples from recent conversations?
If you found enjoyed this post, I'd recommend checking out my Twitter profile where I share regular tweets about indie hacking.
Yes, I can relate. Especially to 1 and 5. It's nice to have friends who do the same thing as me.
